Hello dear DiyHub friends, I hope you are all doing well. This week, the story of a penguin, known as "the nihilist" by internet users, went viral. His story was fascinating, and although it comes from a 2007 documentary, it gained wider recognition thanks to social media. In the video clip, you can see a penguin separating from the group, which was heading towards areas where food was available to survive. "The nihilist" breaks away, and the way he does it seems like a human act. The little penguin decides to go to the mountains, a place where he has little chance of survival. This story deeply moved me, and like millions of people around the world, I felt a connection to it. That's why I created this drawing. I know the penguin couldn't survive and met its end, but I was inspired by Caspar David Friedrich's quintessential Romantic painting, "Man Above the Sea of Fog," to make it victorious. In this homage, the nihilist found his way to the top and contemplated the grandeur of existence in the universe, even though everything seems absurd. Here's a brief step-by-step guide and a video so you can better appreciate the whole process. I hope you like it.
Hola queridos amigos DiyHub espero que se encuentren muy bien,e sta semana se ha hecho viral la historia de un Pingüino, conocido por el nihilista por los internautas, su historia fue fascinante, aunque pertenece a un documental del año 2007, se dio a conocer gracias a las redes sociales. En el extracto del video se puede ver a un pingüino que se aparta del grupo, el cual se dirigía hacia lugares donde había alimentos y así poder sobrevivir, "el nihilista" se aparta, y por la forma que lo hace parece un acto humano. El pequeño toma la decisión de irse a las montañas, lugar donde tiene pocas probabilidades de sobrevivir. Esta historia me conmovió mucho y al igual que millones de personas alrededor del mundo me sentí identificado, es por eso que he realizado este dibujo. Se que el pingüino no pudo sobrevivir y encontró la muerte, sin embargo me inspiré en el cuadro del romanticismo por excelencia "El hombre sobre el mar de nubes" de Caspar Friedrich para hacerlo victorioso, en este homenaje, el nihilista encontró el camino hacia la cima y contemplo la grandeza de la existencia en el universo, aunque todo parezca absurdo. I made the drawing with simple graphite pencils. First, I drew the background of the painting I mentioned earlier by Caspar Friedrich, which is the peak of a high mountain from where the clouds seem to merge with the surface, allowing one to contemplate the immensity of nature. I did these elements with a 4H pencil.
El dibujo lo hice con simples lápices de grafito, en primer lugar dibuje el fondo del cuadro que mencioné antes de Caspar Friedrich, el cual es el pico de una alta montaña desde donde las nubes parecen convertirse en la superficie y se puede contemplar la inmensidad de la naturaleza. Estos aspectos mencionados los hice con un lápiz 4H.

Next, I began painting the penguin, which, as we know, has a large black coat on its back. Here, I'm painting in layers, starting with a gray color and then adding the darker shades. Little by little, you can see it taking shape. In the original painting, a man is seen contemplating everything from above. My idea is that the nihilistic penguin conquered nature, was able to climb to the top, and found what it had to seek in solitude.
Seguidamente comencé a pintar al pingüino, el cual como sabemos tiene una gran capa de color negro en su espalda, aquí voy pintando por capas, comenzando con un color gris y luego agregando los más oscuros. Poco a poco se puede ver como va tomando forma. En cuadro original se ve a un hombre contemplando todo desde arriba, en mi idea es que el pingüino nihilista venció a la naturaleza, pudo subir hasta lo alto y encontró lo que tuvo que buscar en soledad.

At first glance, it seems like an act of existential rebellion, but nature usually has slightly more biological explanations. Something I liked was that while its companions headed to the sea to feed, one penguin, seemingly out of nowhere, stopped, turned around, and began walking inland toward the Antarctic continent. Toward certain death in the ice mountains.
A primera vista, parece un acto de rebeldía existencial, pero la naturaleza suele tener explicaciones un poco más; biológicas. Algo que me gustó fue que mientras sus compañeros se dirigen al mar para alimentarse, un pingüino, de la nada, se detiene, se da la vuelta y comienza a caminar hacia el interior del continente antártico. Hacia una muerte segura en las montañas de hielo.

Then I continued painting the nihilistic penguin until the entire layer was black, with the visible edges painted white. Several of the reasons penguin behaviorists cite is that they can suffer from spatial disorientation. This means that penguins rely on environmental cues (the sun, the magnetic field, the horizon) to navigate. An error in their internal navigation system can lead them to make these decisions; problems such as chemical imbalances can also disrupt their survival instincts.
Luego seguí pintando al pingüino nihilista hatsa finalizar toda la capa de color negro, y los bordes visibles de color blanco. Varias de las razones que manejan los estudiosos del comportamiento de los pingüinos es que puedne llegar a sufrir un desequilibrio de desorientación espacial. Next, I began to reinforce the surrounding nature of the penguin in the mountains with darker pencils. I added more contrast to the enormous rock where it's standing and drew the clouds in white with pastel chalk. It was dubbed a nihilist, since nihilism is a philosophy where nothing has meaning, no value exists, and everything tends toward the negative; the nihilist sees no true reality other than certain death. Because this penguin's fate was the end of its existence after walking 70 km, it was given that name.
Seguidamente comencé a reforzar con lápices más oscuros toda la naturaleza que rodea al pingüino en las montañas. Agregué más contraste en la enorme roca donde esta parado y dibujé las nubes de color blanco con tiza pastel. Fue bautizado como nihilista, ya que es una filosofía donde nada tiene sentido, no existe ningun valor y todo tiende hacia lo negativo, el nihilista no ve más realidad verdadera que la muerte segura. Al ser el destino de este pingüino el fin de su existencia luego de caminar por 70 km, fue llamado de esa manera.
In a world obsessed with connectivity and success, the penguin teaches us the dignity of silence. It makes no noise, it doesn't complain, it doesn't seek followers. It simply walks toward its own horizon. It represents radical freedom: the ability to go to a place where no one can follow you. In this era so devoid of meaning and full of so much "content," it surprises me that millions of people identify with this story. This means that the old narratives that gave meaning to our existence have lost their essence, or perhaps the life of this penguin has simply led us back to searching for that meaning, the path of the hero, of greatness and eternity. It has greatly inspired my life, and I hope it will touch yours as well.
En un mundo obsesionado con la conectividad y el éxito, el pingüino nos enseña la dignidad del silencio. No hace ruido, no se queja, no busca seguidores. Simplemente camina hacia su propio horizonte. Representa la libertad radical: la capacidad de ir hacia un lugar donde nadie puede seguirte. En esta era tan vacía de significado y llena de tanto "contenido" es una sorpresa para mi la identificación de millones de personas con esta historia, esto quiere decir que los viejos relatos que daban sentido a nuestra existencia ya perdieron su esencia, o simplemente la vida de este pingüino nos ha devuelto a buscar ese significado, el camino del héroe, de la grandeza y lo eterno. Insipiró mi vida de una grna manera y espero que también toque a la tuya.

¡Pero qué casualidad! Justo acababa de subir un post hablando de este vídeo del pingüino y me topo con este post. Sí que es popular el Nihilist Feet (ya sabes, de Happy Feet, pero en vez de Happy es Nihilist por nihilista). Por cierto, el dibujo te quedó genial para estar hecho solo con grafito. Se ve que le sabes.
