Lately, I've been practicing a lot of human anatomy, and hands have always been the hardest part for me to draw. Oh my god, they were always a nightmare to draw; they always came out awful. For months now, I've been practicing intensely to learn how to draw hands in different poses. Here's an image of a girl with her hands to her mouth. This drawing is a sketch done with white colored pencil on black cardstock, instead of the traditional method of using white paper and black pencil. Here's a brief explanation of how I did it; I hope you like it.

Últimamente he estado practicando mucho partes de la anatomía del cuerpo humano, y de las que siempre se me hacía difícil de dibujar han sido las manos, oh dios, siempre era una tragedia hacerlas, me salían horribles, y de meses para acá he estado en practica intensa para poder aprender a dibujar las manos en diferentes poses. Aquí les presento una imagen de una chica que se ha llevado sus manos a la boca. Este dibujo es un boceto realizado con lápiz de color blanco y cartulina negra, en lugar de hacerlo como tradicionalmente en papel blanco y lápiz negro. Aquí les comento brevemente como lo hice, espero que les guste.

Although the drawing is in black and white, the white colors are not the same, or rather, they are not the same materials, since the tones vary depending on the quality and purpose. For example, a school crayon, whose point is barely suitable for making very light lines, is not the same as a professional Prismacolor pencil, which is made for the finest finishes. It is in this context that I make my drawing, starting with the face and adding the hands last. The girl's expression is one of savoring the moment while her eyes are closed, her mind lost in her imagination; thus, I believe the most important parts are her eyes and her fingers.
Aunque el dibujo es en blanco y negro, los colores blancos no son lo mismo, o lo que es igual, no son los mismos materiales, ya que depende de la calidad y propósito los tonos suelen variar. Por ejemplo, no es igual un lápiz de cera escolar, cuya apunta apenas sirve para hacer líneas muy clara, a compararlo con un colo profesional prismacolor, el cual está hecho para los mejores acabados. Es en este contexto que hago mi dibujo, comenzando por el rostro al cual agrego en último lugar las manos. Los gestos de la chica es saborearse mientras sus ojos están cerrados con su mente perdida en la imaginación, así creo que las partes importantes son sus ojos y sus dedos.

As I explained before, the difference between the two shades of white is enormous. I started with school white, simply to establish the boundaries of the sketch, to give shape to the face and the hand, which is the protagonist of my drawings. Then, once everything was defined, I began to paint with charcoal white, which I'm using especially for the skin of the face. Here, the magic depends a lot on the stroke, knowing where the stroke should be heavier and heavier.
Como expliqué antes la diferencia es abismal entre ambos tonos de color blanco, comencé con el color blanco escolar, para simplemente establecer los límites del boceto. Darle forma al rostro y a la mano la cual es la protagonista de mis dibujos. Entonces una vez que ya todo estaba delimitado comencé a pintar con el color blanco carboncillo el cual estoy utilizando especialmente para la piel del rostro, aquí la magia depende mucho del trazo, saber en que partes debe ser más fuerte el trazo y donde ser mas suave para generar ese contraste entre luces y sombra, ya el resto aparecerá por sí solo.

Next, I outline each part of the face, paying particular attention to the eyes. Even though they're closed, the shadows cast by the eyelashes on the face are what bring the drawing to life. Therefore, this unpainted area needs to be outlined very carefully to achieve that effect in the eyes. I also outline the lower part of the face, such as the nose and lips.
Así seguidamente voy delineando cada parte dle rostro, haciendo énfasis en los ojos, que aunque se encuentren cerrados las sombras de las pestañas que se refleja en el rostro es lo que le da vida al dibujo. De manera que esta parte que queda sin pintar hay que delinearla muy bien para lograr ese efecto en los ojos. Así también la parte inferior del rostro, como la naríz y llos labios.

Then I begin shaping the hands, especially the two visible fingers that could be said to frame the face at both ends, and the others that are only partially visible because they are hidden in the mouth. The detail I most enjoy working on the hands is the tendons; in my view, they represent the expressions and emotions of the hand, which also communicate a great deal within an image. To further enhance the dark details of the eyes, I use a black colored pencil to darken them even more, making the shadows more intense and realistic.
Luego le voy dando forma a las manos, especialmente a los dos dedos visibles que se podrían decir que rodean el rostro por ambos extremos, y los otros que solo se le ven partes pues están oculto en su boca. El detalle que más me gusta hacer de las manos son sus tendones, a mi movo de ver representan las expresiones y emociones de la mano, las cuales también comunican mucho dentro d euna imagen. Para adornar mejor los detalles oscuros de la mirada, con un lápiz de color negro voy oscureciendo aún más los ojos para que esa sombra sea más intensa y realista.

¿Qué les parece el resultado? digno de una imagen en blanco y negro, que representa muy bien una fotografía con luz, la cual busca resaltar la fuerza del momento. En estas prácticas que he tenido han mejorado mis habilidades, especialmente para dibujar lo que he llamado las emociones de las manos, es dcir la fuerza de los tendones. Espeor que les haya gustado, para mi ha sido un gusto poder compartir con ustedes, me despido hasta pronto.
Te confirmo que es así, manos y pies no solo son difíciles de dibujar, sino de esculpir también, no siempre me quedan bien pero no sé por qué siempre resultan tan dificiles de hacer en diversas áreas artísticas.
