Hola, chicos. Espero que se encuentren muy bien. El día de hoy tenía algo de tiempo sin publicar en esta comunidad; sin embargo, ya que decidí hacer algo relativamente nuevo como contenido, en esta oportunidad quise también probar compartirlo en una comunidad distinta. Como no me parece algo tan elaborado o estético como muchas otras cosas que he hecho, sino que es más útil y práctico, decidí colocarlo acá.
Hi, guys! I hope you're all doing great. It's been a while since I last posted in this community; however, since I decided to try something relatively new as content, I also wanted to share it in a different space. Because it doesn’t seem as elaborate or aesthetic as many other things I’ve done—rather, it’s more useful and practical—I decided to post it here.
Yo tuve aproximadamente tres años queriendo hacer cosas como calcomanías, pegatinas o teniendo infinidad de ideas que quería realizar, pero que no concretaba por no saber cómo preservarlas correctamente. A pesar de que encontré muchos métodos alternativos, como el esmalte de uñas transparente o el top coat que se sella con la lámpara UV, sentía que me hacía falta algo que pudiera utilizar o tener almacenado en mayor cantidad. Sabía que necesitaba un barniz; sin embargo, los barnices que quería, específicamente transparentes, que no fueran únicamente para madera o carpintería costaban un poco más de dinero del que pensaba gastar en una ferretería o tienda de papelería.
For about three years, I had been wanting to make things like decals, stickers, and had countless ideas I wanted to bring to life, but I didn’t follow through because I didn’t know how to preserve them properly. Even though I found many alternative methods, like clear nail polish or UV lamp-sealed top coat, I felt I needed something I could use or store in larger quantities. I knew I needed a varnish; however, the ones I wanted—specifically transparent ones that weren’t just for wood or carpentry—were a bit more expensive than I expected at hardware or stationery stores.

Si ven que esta vez mi set-up está un poco diferente, por así decirlo, es porque no lo hice en mi hábitat natural, es decir, mi habitación. Este proceso libera ciertos gases con un olor muy fuerte que pueden resultar nocivos en concentraciones grandes y en espacios cerrados sin ventilación. Entonces, siempre, siempre háganlo en un lugar ventilado, preferiblemente el jardín de su casa o en cualquier lugar abierto.
If you notice that my setup looks a bit different this time, it’s because I didn’t do this in my usual space—my bedroom. This process releases certain gases with a very strong smell that can be harmful in high concentrations and in enclosed spaces without ventilation. Dicho esto, lo primero que vamos a hacer es tomar una de las bandejitas y, con ayuda de las tijeras, cortarlas en cuadritos pequeños. Les recomiendo que las corten de esta manera porque así el proceso será mucho más rápido y sencillo.
That said, the first thing we’re going to do is take one of the foam trays and, using scissors, cut it into small squares. I recommend cutting them this way because it makes the process much faster and easier.
Vamos a tomar un poco de la gasolina que está almacenada en un botecito de vidrio (asegúrese de que pueda cerrarse herméticamente al terminar) y vertemos un poco en el lugar donde deseamos realizar el barniz. Yo elegí este frasco que tenía en casa.
Next, we’ll take a bit of gasoline stored in a small glass jar (make sure it can be sealed tightly afterward) and pour a little into the container where we’ll make the varnish. I used a jar I already had at home.
Seguidamente, quise mostrarles qué es lo que ocurre con el tergopor cuando lo colocas en la gasolina: este se empieza a disolver de la siguiente forma. Y esto es lo que crea esa mezcla espesa, transparente y firme.
Then I wanted to show you what happens when you place the styrofoam in gasoline: it begins to dissolve like this. And this is what creates that thick, transparent, and firm mixture.
Vamos a colocarlos todos. Yo, en mi caso, fui recortando una bandejita, añadí los trozos, los revolví con palito,esto ayuda a que se disuelvan más rápido e integren mejor los componentes de la mezcla. Esperaba a que se disolvieron todos y probaba si la consistencia y el resultado se adaptaban a mis necesidades. Ustedes pueden hacer lo mismo según lo que necesiten: le pueden añadir más o menos. Pero siempre les recomiendo que no añadan demasiado poco, porque entonces el barniz no será muy resistente. Pero si le añaden demasiado tergopor, probablemente ya deje de ser un barniz y se convierta en un pegamento. Por cierto, a medida que le vayan colocando más tergopor también el color se volverá más opaco.
We’re going to add all the pieces. In my case, I cut up one tray, added the pieces, stirred them with a stick—this helps them dissolve faster and allows the components to integrate better. I waited until everything was dissolved and tested whether the consistency and result matched what I needed. You can do the same depending on your needs: you can add more or less. But I always recommend not adding too little, because then the varnish won’t be very durable. On the other hand, if you add too much styrofoam, it might stop being a varnish and turn into a glue. Also, the more styrofoam you add, the more opaque the color will become.
Entonces añadí tres bandejitas y media, y con esto ya probé la consistencia de la siguiente manera: en mi caso, quería que el barniz no quedara muy amarillento ni con un tono opaco o fuerte. Por tanto, lo hice lo más ligero que pude. Tomé un espejito de color blanco que tengo en casa, en donde estaban unos lentes de contacto, y con ayuda de un pincel plano de cerdas blandas (utilizo este porque siento que ayuda a que no queden vetas al momento de barnizar), lo probé.
So I added three and a half foam trays, and with that I tested the consistency as follows: in my case, I didn’t want the varnish to turn out too yellowish or have a dull or strong tone. So I made it as light as I could. I took a small white mirror I have at home, where I keep my contact lenses, and with the help of a flat brush with soft bristles (I use this one because I feel it helps avoid streaks when varnishing), I gave it a try.
No se nota mucho la diferencia, pero traté de que se viera el lugar en donde coloqué el barniz y el lugar en el que no. También pude ver que el barniz estaba funcionando debido a los restos que quedaron en el palito de madera que estaba usando para mezclarlo.
There’s not a huge difference visually, but I tried to show the area where I applied the varnish and the area where I didn’t. I could also tell the varnish was working because of the residue left on the wooden stick I used to mix it.
Como no se me ocurrió qué otra cosa barnizar por el momento, decidí tomar este llavero de cuatro venezolano que tenía en casa y probar a barnizarlo. Como por el frente ya estaba barnizado previamente, decidí barnizarlo por detrás y por los laterales. Sin embargo, si quieren obtener un barnizado como el que tiene frontalmente, lo único que tienen que hacer es añadir varias capas de barniz, obviamente dejando que cada una se seque durante el tiempo que le corresponde. Pero en mi caso, como quise ser más rápida para probar si de verdad el barniz me funcionaba o no, solo le añadí una capa al resto del instrumento.
Since I couldn’t think of anything else to varnish at the moment, I decided to grab this Venezuelan cuatro keychain I had at home and try varnishing it. The front was already varnished previously, so I decided to varnish the back and the sides. However, if you want a finish like the one on the front, all you need to do is apply several layers of varnish, making sure to let each one dry for the appropriate amount of time. In my case, since I wanted to be quick and just test whether the varnish actually worked, I only applied one layer to the rest of the instrument.

Una vez tengamos nuestro barniz de la forma en la que queremos, lo último que falta es identificarlo. Por ejemplo, acá en casa muchas veces hay frascos llenos de mezclas que hacemos hace mucho tiempo y que colocamos en el lugar incorrecto. Luego nos olvidamos de ellos y, cuando los encontramos, no sabemos qué contienen. Así que, en mi caso, quise identificarlo para prevenir esto. Tomé un trocito de papel y mi bolígrafo roller favorito.
Once we have our varnish the way we want it, the last step is to label it. For example, at home we often have jars full of mixtures we made a long time ago, and we put them in the wrong place. Later, we forget about them, and when we find them again, we don’t know what they are. So in my case, I wanted to label it to avoid that. I took a small piece of paper and my favorite rollerball pen.
Así que ya tenemos listo nuestro barniz súper casero y absurdamente práctico de hacer.
So now we have our super homemade varnish, ridiculously easy to make.
Ah, y no olviden lavar su pincel correctamente Al momento de terminar de barnizar para hacerlo solo necesitan más gasolina lavan un poco el pincel con esto como si lo estuvieran lavando con agua dentro de un recipiente y posteriormente eligen un pañuelo en particular que esté viejo y sin utilidad para limpiar con mucho cuidado el pincel por favor no Les recomiendo dejarlo demasiado tiempo en la gasolina porque lo que puede ocurrir es que se le saldrán las cerdas también Les recomiendo que no los froten muy fuerte con el trapo o que no jalen las cerdas porque pueden dejarlo calvo. 🤣
Oh, and don’t forget to clean your brush properly when you finish varnishing. To do this, you just need more gasoline. Wash the brush with it as if you were using water in a container, and then choose an old, useless cloth to carefully wipe the brush. Please don’t leave it soaking in gasoline for too long, because the bristles might fall out. Also, I recommend not rubbing it too hard with the cloth or pulling on the bristles, because you might end up with a bald brush.
