Today I want to share with you my first holiday craft of the year: a little Christmas gift box made almost entirely with recycled materials. I had some leftover pieces of wrapping paper, a little chalk box I had kept stored for a while and bits of cardstock from past December projects. I would see them from time to time and think, “I’ll use these someday,” so now that the season has officially started, it felt like the perfect moment to give them a second life.

Hoy quiero compartirles mi primera manualidad decembrina de este año: una cajita de regalo navideña hecha casi por completo con materiales reciclados. Tenía guardados unos retazos de papel de regalo, una cajita de tizas que tenia guardada desde hace tiempo y varias piezas de cartulina que habían quedado de manualidades de diciembre anteriores. Los veía cada tanto y pensaba “algún día los usaré”, así que, ahora que empezó la temporada me pareció el momento perfecto para darles una segunda vida.

❄️Step by step / Paso a paso❄️
Step 1: To start, I wiped the little box with a cloth. It used to hold chalk, so it still had a bit of dust on it. I like beginning any craft project with everything as clean as possible, so after that I painted the inside using an off-white shade and decorated the bottom with a piece of wrapping paper.
Paso 1: Para comenzar, limpié la cajita con un trapito. Antes contenía tizas, así que todavía tenía un poco de polvo. Me gusta empezar cualquier manualidad con todo lo más limpio posible, así que después pinté el interior con un tono blanco hueso y decoré la base usando un trozo de papel de regalo.
Step 2: Then I gathered all the wrapping-paper scraps I had saved and began gluing them onto each side of the box.
As you know, wrapping paper is pretty delicate and tears easily, but I really liked the design and wanted to use it. To avoid wrinkles or bubbles, I first brushed a thin layer of white glue over the surface and then placed each piece carefully.
Paso 2: Luego junté todos los retazos de papel de regalo que tenía guardados y comencé a pegarlos en cada cara de la caja. Como saben, este tipo de papel es delicado y suele romperse con facilidad, pero me encantó el diseño y quería aprovecharlo. Para evitar que se arrugara o formara burbujas, primero pasé una capa fina de pega blanca sobre la superficie y después fui acomodando cada trocito con cuidado.
Step 3: The next step was to look for cardstock scraps that matched the Christmas theme. I decided to tear them by hand to give the decoration a more organic look, so I prepared several pieces and glued them onto the areas that were still uncovered. The contrast between the smooth wrapping paper and the rough edges of the cardstock added a really nice touch.
Paso 3: El siguiente paso fue buscar pedacitos de cartulina que combinaran con la temática navideña. Se me ocurrió rasgarlos para darles un acabado más orgánico, así que preparé varios retazos y fui pegándolos en las partes que habían quedado sin cubrir, ese contraste entre papel liso y bordes irregulares le dio un toque muy bonito.
Step 4: After that, I thought, What’s something very typical of Christmas? And of course the fireplace. So I cut out small brown cardstock squares and decorated different parts of the box using a brick-like pattern. It was a simple detail, but it ended up adding a lot to the overall design.
Paso 4: Después pensé: ¿Qué elemento es muy típico de la Navidad? Y claro pense en las chimeneas, así que recorté pequeños cuadritos de cartulina marrón y decoré diferentes zonas de la caja haciendo una especie de patrón inspirado en ladrillos. Fue un detalle sencillo, pero terminó aportando muchísimo al diseño general.
Step 5: At this point, the box was almost ready; I just needed to decorate the lid.
Paso 5: Para este punto la cajita ya estaba casi lista, solo me faltaba decorar la tapa.
