Let's make a granny square!!

Crocheting is one of those hobbies where, if you're not careful enough, you might find yourself obsessing over it. When I first dabbled in it, I stuck to patterns I already knew.

That was before I found the crochet corner of TikTok. All of a sudden my feed was filled with exciting patterns I couldn't wait to try out.

Before I knew it, an unreasonable amount of my salary was allocated to purchasing pins and different pretty colors of wool.

I came across this very adorable moon and sun pattern on the World Wide Web and decided I wouldn't rest until I replicated it, stitch for stitch.

So I got my tools ready and stitched away. You are gonna join me today.

Tools

  • White wool for the moon
  • Red for the Sun
  • Green for the background
  • Crochet pin
  • Scissors

Procedure

Start with the red yarn and make a magic ring.

Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), then make 11 dc into the ring. Join with sl st to the top of ch-2. (12 dc). Ch 2, 1 dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around. Join. (24 dc)

Still using red yarn, ch 4, sl st into 2nd ch from hook, sc in next, dc in last, skip 1 stitch on the circle, sl st into nextโ€”this makes one ray.

Repeat this ray pattern around the circle: you should get 12 rays if youโ€™re skipping every other stitch.

Finish off and weave in ends.

Attach white yarn a few stitches in from the red circle's edge. Ch 1, sc, hdc, dc, dc, hdc, sc to shape the outer edge of the moon. For the inner curve, make smaller stitches (sc, sl st) to curve it in.

Join dark green yarn to any point of the red star. Start working single crochet (sc) around the shape, increasing in the corners to gradually form a square; follow the natural curves, adding 2 sc in a stitch where needed to help flatten the shape. Do about 2โ€“3 rounds to get a solid dark green background.

Switch to bright green yarn. Work traditional granny square rounds; Round 1: In any corner, ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc (corner cluster). Then 3 dc in each space, and corners as 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc. Repeat for 2โ€“3 more rounds to expand the square.
