My Fellowship Experience

When I was growing up in my early primary schools days. I used to think of how certain children find it difficult to learn or go to school. Most of the pupil concerns are from either poor families or sub-areas of my state. They find it difficult to eat and feed themselves. The students come to school with an empty stomach after a long trek. I beginning to think about how I can help this one. I started developing the mentality of volunteering, helping the needy in my locality, and how I can affect and impact my community.
With my experiences and my passion for Teaching and Learning. I decided to take up the challenges. I start a two-year fellowship with Teach for Nigeria in pursuit of educational Equity. The vast majority of children in my country do not have access to quality education. Those in the underserved area are at a high disadvantage. They could neither read English fluently nor write well. This is the core mission of teaching for Nigeria. And I am happy to be part of this movement

I started my fellowship program in an underserved community in a public school of Ibeju-lekki local government of Lagos state. On getting there I saw a lot of anomalies, things that I witnessed in my primary school. The students are in a serious lack. The environment had affected them. A lot of them from 7th grade to 12th can’t read and write. The girl child is suffering from teenage pregnancy, some of them are molested early in their years, in short, a lot to ponder about.
At first, I was very discouraged, thinking about how to cope in a less privileged community, without a power supply, social amenities. But the question that rings in my heart is how can I help these children with great ambition. But find no space to help themselves. I took up the challenges of reorienting them, changing their mindset, inculcating values, and winning mentality. I always encourage them they can do it, irrespective of their background. I do tell them they must believe in themselves and fight to win. I am glad to see the growth and development of my students, they are self-aware of themselves daily, thinking about their future and how they can be successful irrespective of their background or environment they find themselves in. My passion for volunteering work does not waiver, even though there are a lot of discouraging stories, but that is what keeps us moving. I believe that one day every Nigerian child will have equal opportunity to education Teaching is my passion, making impacting is what I desire
