When the town crier announced the demise of the King, everyone in the whole village went into mourning. The King was a great man who was highly respected by other Kings from other kingdoms. His death meant that his eldest son would have to be crowned King but before that would happen, custom and tradition demands that a great feast be held in honor of the late King and everyone prepared for it.

The King had two sons, Felix his eldest son and Chidubem his youngest and though Chidubem knew the customs of the land, he refused to abide by them. Chidubem felt he had every quality to be a King and that handing the kingship to his elder brother without any challenge was unfair.

And so Chidubem approached Ifeanyi, one of his brothers closest friend. The two were so closed that everyone called Ifeanyi the prince's personal adviser. Chidubem promised to make Ifeanyi the second in command in the kingdom if only Ifeanyi would help him get rid of his brother. The offer was too good to pass by, so Ifeanyi had accepted.

The plan, according to the young prince was an easy one. All Ifeanyi had to do was to offer the crown prince some wine in a cup that would be given to him by the young prince. To avoid suspicion, they both will drink the same wine but what the crown prince won't know is that his cup had been laced with poison.

Ifeanyi agreed and a few days later, guests arrived from far and wide for the feast. They all came bearing gifts for the new King to-be, a symbol of good will. The feast began and Ifeanyi watched the crown prince and waited for the time to strike. The poisoned cup had been given to him the night before, so all he had to do was to hand it over to the crown prince and pour him some wine.

It felt like eternity but at last the moment came and Ifeanyi did as he was told. He gave the cup filled with wine to the prince and the prince had emptied its content in his belle. But few seconds after he had consumed the substance in the cup, he fell to the floor unconscious.

“That was not the plan” Ifeanyi thought to himself. “The young prince had assured him that the poison would take a while before it worked, giving him enough time to get far away from the prince as possible. The young prince had lied to him”. As Ifeanyi stood motionless, trying to gather his thoughts, the young prince ran to his brother who laid on the floor.

“Brother.. What have you done to him?” Chidubem, the young prince asked a dumbfounded Ifeanyi.

"This was also not part of the plan" Ifeanyi thought but before he could say a word, he had been arrested by the palace guard and thrown into the palace prison where he would stay and await judgment.

The young prince cried and mourned his brother as dignitaries from other kingdoms tried to console him. He put up a good show until they had all left. Then he stood over his brothers body and gloat. The kingdom was his and the only person who knew of his atrocities would be executed by sunrise.

The young prince went to bed like a baby under the bosom of his mother, knowing fully well that nothing could harm him.

Sunrise came and Ifeanyi was taken to the village square where he would be executed. He looked tired and weak as they placed the rope around his neck. Everyone awaited the young prince to give the final command but instead they heard a different voice, the voice of someone they had all taught was no more.

“Bring him down.” Prince Felix ordered as everyone looked at him with fear.

"Did he return from the dead?" whispers could be heard as prince Felix walked up to his brother who looked the most shocked.

“My brother, you're well.” The young prince managed to say but the crown prince ignored him.

“The one who deserves to be hanged is my brother, for he orchestrated my death.” The crowd gasped as the Prince's revelation. “I would have been dead today if my good friend had not warned me of what my brother had planned. My friend had made an antidote to the poison my brother placed in the cup and I had taken the antidote that morning, before the feast. I owe my life to this man.” the crown prince finished as the palace guards immediately removed the ropes from the neck of Ifeanyi.

“This man is an hero and would be celebrated once I'm crowned king. As for my brother, he shall pay for his crimes”. The Crowned prince said before walking away.

He had a kingdom to protect and no one was going to stop him, not even his brother.
