Is hatred inborn or learnt?

Inborn is regarded as innate in philosophy. Innatism is that idea or knowledge of things which we know but we were not taught by anyone.

Certain things have been argued in favour and against inborn attributes. Some have argued that the idea of God is inborn in man such that he knows there is a God whether being told or not.

Others have argued that our sense of taste which differentiate sweetness from bitterness is innate.

Whether these arguments are well grounded or not is arguable philosophically.

A good response can be found in John Locke's explanation of blank slate - tabula rasa. This, he claims is the reality of all man with no innate knowledge.

But when it comes to our character and behaviours, some things seem not to gel well.

I have personally wondered why loving and kind parents beget callous and wicked children?

Similarly, i wonder why there are beautiful souls out there with hearts of gold, yet their parents are 'wicked'?

It makes me ask why that is not genetically transfered or what else can we say about gene if we get almost all but behave differently with strange behaviours.

Perhaps, a rescue to this worry could be that we are born with this 'bad' or 'good' trait.

We need not forget also that if we push this argument further, we would need to explain why we were told we are free beings, yet have no power over something like hatred or love.

Some have argued that we are all capable of love and hate which suggest that we choose to love and we choose to hate.

But are they sure about the 'choices' claim because these wicked ones are not ready to make such choice or even see it as a step they must take.

Or could it be argued that one with loving heart can also choose to be evil too. Yes, i know we are capable of both but can we streamline it down to choices ahead of being inborn?

If we must, then we must be able to explain why these kids behave the opposite way to what we know their parents for and vice versa.

If it not inborn but a choice, how did we choose these things? What is responsible for this choice?

Society, school or friends? It can be said to be parents when the parents and their children are wicked or kind all together. But when it is on the opposite sides, we can't tie them to parents and as such we must tie then to something else.

What we must tie them to is what i can't say and perhaps, you do?

In your opinion, what should that be? Are people innately bad and full of hatred or they just learn it from society, parents or friends?

Thanks as you drop your opinions.

I'm pretty certain that hate is learnt. Nobody is born with sentiments and utter disdain but "experiences in society cause this hate.

My view too! We learnt it from the society.

Thank you for the upvote! 💪

I would say that not all the experiences that a child faces comes from the parents, and also that you would only see the public facing persona of the family.

True! Some are learnt from the society (indirectly) and others from their friends.
