The Jungle Justice Menace

Civilization is in many ways, a matter of logic and rationalism ahead of barbarism. It means doing things differently from the traditional era.

To be civil is to be responsible. It means doing things in a way that conforms with 21st century realities and not dark ages.

Today, we have many laws for almost everything. These laws give room for fair hearing and fair trial of all issues.

Like we know, no one is considered criminal unless proven guilty and convicted.

But it appears some places are still far from this civilization. Although they are in the 21st century according to their calendar but in reality, they are far behind.

Imagine still having people with mob mentality? Funny enough they are not all uneducated. This is the surprise aspect of it.

In many states in Nigeria, jungle justice is like a norm. They see it as a cause and effect scenario such that once someone commits certain things (cause), the person is meted with jungle justice (effect).

They forget that there is no justice in jungle justice. In fact, the justice there is a pseudo one.

Here, if you steal a seasoning worth 20 naira (0.05$) and you are caught. You will be beaten by angry mobs on the street.

They don't see it as a good thing to hand you over to the police and then leave the rest for the government to handle.

Funny enough, these same people hail their politicians who use pen to loot millions from them.

Their street are bad without light, their markets are without roofs, their roads are full of pot holes.

They never protested, ask questions or even attempt to ask them why they fail to perform the task for which they were elected to office.

But an ordinary man on the street is immediately beaten without even hearing him out to know if the accusation of stealing is true or false.

There are cases where the accused is innocent. People have shouted thief thief and beaten the accused only to know he didn't steal anything.

Are these people jobless, are they blind, is it that life does not worth anything to them? Who makes these people jury that they put the law into their hands and feel jungle justice is the answer to every 'criminal' activities in the state?

Even if the law has failed many, does it mean we now have the power to kill all even when such act does not worth death sentence in the court of law?

What then differentiate us from the law that failed us? What differentiate us from the savage that kill one another for no reason?

The earlier this issue is addressed, the better. If we fail to address it, we might become victims ourselves. A world where jungle justice is not checked is a chaotic one. Everyone is prone and could be a victim.

Preach it, educate the people. Let them see why law should handle such and not them.

Thanks for your time.
