And last year, the spread of this fake information was 30 percent. Facebook engineers themselves think this is a serious problem.
Whistleblower Frances Hagen, meanwhile, commented that such issues could prove that Facebook's algorithm should be made open to other researchers, or that Facebook should move away from engagement-based ranking algorithms.
