A Window

Women have always been subjected to see as feeble and burden. A damsel in distress, the weaker vessel, the better half - these are some of the terms that are heard quite regularly. But women proved to have perseverance in the face of adversity, enormous strength that visualizes anything but weak; she’s not the better half, she’s a whole person.

“Frailty, thy name is woman!” (Hamlet)

That’s not an everlasting case, and contradictory to the quote would be is when Antonio was saved by Portia (The Merchant of Venice). I’m not judging Shakespeare because to him stage was a world where imagination ran wild and he chose to make his character however he wanted. Sadly, it’s usually easier to misunderstand females. Sometimes women are compared to Snow White or Aurora, sometimes they’re seen as Nurse Ratched or Wicked Witch of The West. History at times confuses itself of how it saw women, many queens and strong leaders there were, from pharaohs to philosophers but alas, ambition, power, and respect for women is not to be expected. More so women have been called as their own enemies and repeatedly we have viewed ourselves as inadequate let alone vilified by others. That was the past.

The present scenario is slightly varied. You see a woman being a ruler of the nation, you start thinking the society is modern. A company where a few women are senior officials might portray an optimistic personality. But is the reality the same? Not always. Just because a firm has women in higher positions, doesn’t mean they don’t face discrimination. That is just a view of the corporate world; I could be wrong and maybe not everywhere is the same. Man’s world, they say; some men even say that “Women are priceless flowers, they should be kept safe and taken care of. They’re not to be paraded around.”

I’ll tell you about a brother, who even though had a rather open mind, couldn’t overlook society. The elder sister of his is highly qualified, with 4 Masters Degrees, when her brother asked her if she wanted a family, she could only answer, “you’re my younger brother, and all the love I could give to my children I gave it all to you. I’m empty.” Then the brother thought carefully and told her, “You should leave here.” Don’t think of less for the brother, he concluded because he knew he wouldn’t be able to find a groom that could match up with her. So, he sold most of their ancestral properties to send her off to Canada where she’s now doing her Ph.D. Even today when so many want things to be equal for both men and women, they can barely look past the social barriers as they themselves got to live in the society.

Masked by futuristic nature and the feminist movement, there are plenty of hints pointing towards all the negative traits which, in general, every individual possesses. But in women, they’re highlighted more, almost as if they are an alien species. It’s said that women are to be loved, cherished, and cared for, but something invariably remains unsung - “like all and every human”. As if this simple phrase would gain women equality and from that authority which would turn them into crowns resting gloriously on the heads of humans.

Did you smell a tad bit of feminism in me? I believe in equality, I should be treated justly, above all I should be seen as a whole human; a human above everything else. We’re held as a delicate flower, a fragile showpiece, sword and shield, a priceless work of art; where is the human in this equation?
