Sanibel Island, Florida - Island That Was Leveled By a Recent Hurricane

in Geoweather Geekslast year

While searching for pics I looked at some photos I took in Florida, I saw Sanibel Island photos and then I remembered that things in these photos don't even exist anymore because this island was leveled by a recent hurricane Ian.

On September 28 Sanibel island pretty much got a direct hit by hurricane Ian. That was a high-end category 4 major hurricane( almost 5) with winds 147Mph.
Before it was pretty much a paradise island with beaches and beach houses. After the hurricane, almost nothing remained. There were 4720 houses on that island, most of them now damaged and unlivable, some houses wiped entirely and nothing remains. 12 people lost their lives of people who did not evacuate.

I traveled there in 2020. This is a Sanibel lighthouse before, when I was there.

In addition, to the winds, this island got a very high storm surge, several meters high that flooded and destroyed most of the houses.

This is the Sanibel Island causeway, the only bridge that leads to the island, big junks of it got ripped away.

You can see my original post from 2020 here.
I hope that they can rebuild this island and not only that but Fort Myers too which got hit by the same force. It will take several years due to the damage but I hope it happens soon, it's a beautiful area.

Wow that is a lot of destruction. I heard about the hurricane, of course, I didn't see the pictures after.

It definitely is. Horrible to see before and after pictures from different areas that got a direct landfall.

Dam is crazy the amount of destruction it made!

 last year

Yeah, definitely.

Crazy to think about the strength of a hurricane and how much destruction it can cause 😬

Yep and the wind is not the most destructive enemy but water always is with these storms.
