| Zanim wejdziemy na jego teren – kilka słów o historii: | Before we enter, a few words about its history: |

| Klasztor został założony w pierwszej połowie VI wieku n.e. przez Dawida z Garedżi. Na samym początku mnich i jego uczeń Lucjan zamieszkali w jednej z niewielkich jaskiń położonych nad jednym z górskich potoczków. Jednak wkrótce dołączyli do nich kolejni mnisi, pojawiła się konieczność powiększania przestrzeni życiowej i po jakimś czasie powstał normalny, pełnoskalowy klasztor – Ławra Dawida. Klasztor ten w kolejnych wiekach stał się ośrodkiem większego kompleksu, w skład którego weszły jeszcze inne klasztory wybudowane, czy może lepiej – wykute w okolicznych skałach. Dziś możemy w nim zobaczyć – przynajmniej z pewnej odległości – zarówno najstarsze budynki, jak i te nowsze, powstałe na przykład w XVII czy XVIII wieku. Najważniejszym i największym jest kościół św. apostoła Jana z XII wieku. | The monastery has been founded in the first half of the 6th century by David of Gareji. In the very beginning, the monk and his disciple Lutian were dwelling in one of small caves located at one of the mountain creeks. But soon other monks have joined them, and the expansion of living space became a necessity. Soon a normal, full-sized monastery - Lavra of David - has been built. In the next centuries, it became a center of a bigger complex, including more monasteries built, or maybe better - carved in the neighbourhood rocks. Today we can see there - from a distance, at least - both the oldest parts, and the newer ones, built in the 17th or 18th centuries. The most important and the biggest one is the church of St. John the Apostle from the 12th century. |

| Usiąść właściwie też można, ale akurat niekoniecznie polecam, bo to czarna morwa i ewentualne plamy potem trudno będzie sprać. Wykute w skale cele mnichów i inne pomieszczenia można podziwiać tylko z daleka: | In fact, we can sit there too, but I'd rather not recommend it - the tree is a black mulberry, and well, if we get any stain, it will be very difficult to remove. The monk cells carved in the rocks, and the other rooms we can admire only from a distance: |

Ogólnie biorąc, miejsce jest bardzo malownicze i towarzyszą nam piękne widoki, wrażenie robią chociażby klasztorne wieże: | - for the tourists, the access for this part of the monastery is prohibited, and I totally agree with that. In general, the place is pictoresque, and the views we see are beautiful. Let's say, the monastery towers are really impressive: |

| Wrażenie jest jeszcze lepsze, kiedy przedostaniemy się do najwyżej położonej części i podziwiamy wszystko z góry: | The impression is even better, when we reach the highest part of the monastery and look at everything from above: |

| ale tak mniej więcej po trzech kwadransach niewiele już zostaje do oglądania. | but after three quarters or so there's not much left to see. |

| Ławrę opuszczamy przed 15 i zastanawiamy się, co robić dalej. Asia nalega na to, żeby podążyć w górę niewielką, lecz stromą ścieżką, wijącą się kilkadziesiąt metrów przed klasztorną bramą. Ja początkowo mam pewne opory, nie wiedząc, ile czasu nam to zajmie i czy zdążymy dotrzeć na nocleg tam, gdzie sobie zaplanowaliśmy, ale ostatecznie ulegam. I jest to bardzo dobra decyzja, bo to, co na nas czeka na górze, przyniesie nam wiele radości i satysfakcji. Ale o tym już w kolejnym odcinku! | We leave Lavra just before 3 PM, and discuss, what should we do next. Asia insists, that we should climb a small but steep path, going up just several meters before the monastery gate. At the beginning, I'm rather skeptical about that, not knowing, how much time will we need, and whether we'll manage to reach our planned overnight stay on time - remembering the adventures at the firing range, but eventually I agree. And that's a very good decision - what waited for us at the top, has brought us a lot of joy and satisfaction. But this will be in the next episode already :) |
