The photo of the initiative inspires me to create a story for you, maybe fictional, maybe based on real events; I haven't decided yet. This old phone brings back so many memories, and I stopped using it so long ago that I can only imagine it being displayed in an antique shop.
La foto de la iniciativa me inspira a crearles una historia, tal vez ficticia, tal vez basada en hechos reales, todavía no lo decido. Es que este teléfono tan viejo me trae tantos recuerdos y yo dejé de usarlo hace tanto que solo me lo imagino siendo expuesto en una tienda de antigüedades.
Fernando was the name of the owner of that store where you could find countless objects that no one wanted anymore and that had been used by many people in the past. However, over the years and with the advancement of technology, these objects became less important and began to be replaced by faster ones or those with the much-desired internet connection.
Fernando, así se llamaba el dueño de aquella tienda donde se conseguían un sinfín de objetos que ya nadie quería y que habían sido utilizados en el pasado por muchas personas. Sin embargo, con el paso de los años y el avance de la tecnología, estos objetos dejaron de tener importancia y empezaron a ser sustituidos por otros más rápidos o con la tan deseada conexión a internet.
It's a fact that technology advances by leaps and bounds, but for Fernando, this wasn't the case. He was somewhat resistant to change and clung to things no one wanted anymore. Among them was a beige rotary phone with red numbers. A classic ringtone for a telephone of yesteryear.
Es un hecho que la tecnología avanza a pasos agigantados, pero para Fernando, esto no ocurría. Él era algo así como resistente al cambio y se adhería a las cosas que ya nadie quería. Entre ellos estaba un teléfono de disco color beige con números rojos. Un tono clásico para un teléfono antaño.
Of all the things Fernando had in the store, this phone was the only one he couldn't repair because he was missing a spare part that he couldn't find anywhere. He had already spoken to several colleagues and friends to find out where he could find the missing part to replace it, but despite all his efforts, nothing had worked. He hadn't been able to locate it or replace the damaged part.
De todo lo que Fernando tenía en la tienda, este teléfono era lo único que él no podía reparar ya que le faltaba un repuesto que no conseguía en ningún lado. Ya había hablado con varios colegas y amistades para saber dónde podría encontrar la pieza que le faltaba para reemplazarla, pero a pesar de todos sus esfuerzos, nada, no había logrado ubicarla ni tampoco reemplazar lo que tenía dañado.
Fernando, like every day, was in charge of cleaning the store, dusting the objects he had in it very carefully, and always at the same time, a little girl came to the store asking him if he had already repaired the phone.
Fernando, como todos los días, se encargaba de limpiar la tienda, despolvoreando los objetos que tenía en ella con mucho cuidado, y siempre a la misma hora iba una pequeña niña a la tienda preguntándole si ya había reparado el teléfono.
I think Fernando felt some pressure to accommodate him, since the girl, despite her young age, seemed like a potential customer to get rid of said device.
Good afternoon, Don Fernando, have you fixed the phone yet? I want to call my grandma.
The girl asked curiously. To which Fernando always replied:
No, little girl, I still haven't found the replacement part, and without it, the phone won't work.
She rebutted: Are you sure? Have you plugged it in and tested it to see if it fixed itself?
He replied: Of course! If you hadn't, I wouldn't know it was broken and I wouldn't be looking for a replacement part.
Creo que de allí Fernando sentía cierta presión por acomodarlo, ya que la niña, a pesar de su corta edad, parecía ser un cliente potencial para salir de dicho artefacto.
Buenas tardes, don Fernando, ¿ya reparó el teléfono? Es que quiero llamar a mi abuelita.
Preguntó la niña con curiosidad. A lo que Fernando siempre le respondía:
No nenita, todavía no consigo el repuesto y sin eso el teléfono no funciona.
Ella le refutaba: ¿estas seguro? ¿Lo has enchufado y lo has probado para saber si eso se reparó solo?
Él le respondió: ¡Claro que si! De no haberlo hecho no sabría que está dañado y no estaría buscando su repuesto.
The girl insisted, saying, But my grandma wants to talk to me, and she asked me to find the phone she has in her store.
Fernando, seeing the girl so insistent, decided to plug the phone into the jack he used to test these types of devices. He plugged in the phone cord, lifted the receiver, and nothing—there's no dial, and even the dial is stuck. He gave it to the girl to listen to, and she nodded that she couldn't hear anything.
Just then, they hung up the phone, and as soon as they closed it, a loud, old-fashioned telephone bell rang.
La niña insistía diciendo: Pero es que mi abuelita quiere hablar conmigo y me pidió que buscara justamente el teléfono que tiene en su tienda.
Fernando, al ver a la niña tan insistente, decidió conectar el teléfono a la toma que usaba para probar este tipo de objetos. Conecta el cable del teléfono, levanta la bocina y nada, no hay tono, incluso el disco está trabado. Se lo da a la niña para que escuche y ella asiente con la cabecita que no oye nada.
En eso cuelgan el teléfono y apenas lo cierran suena un estruendoso timbre de teléfono viejo.

I'll answer! said the girl excitedly:
Hello? How have you been? Bless me, I miss you so much. When will I see you again? Will you come see me? I see
Fernando was stunned; he didn't know what was happening and thought the girl was playing with him. When the girl hung up, Fernando, intrigued, asked: Who was that?
It was my grandma. She said she'd come see me every night; I wanted to hear it from her. My mom told me I wouldn't see her again.*
And is your grandma traveling? Does she live far away? (Asked Fernando).
No, she's in heaven, and they use these phones there. (Answered the girl)

¡Yo contesto! dijo la niña entusiasmada:
¿Aló? ¿Cómo has estado? Bendición, te extraño mucho. ¿cuándo te vuelvo a ver? ¿vendrás a verme? Ya veo
Fernando estaba atónito, no sabía lo que estaba pasando y pensaba que la niña le estaba jugando carrito. A lo que la niña cuelga, Fernando intrigado le pregunta: ¿quién era?
Era mi abuelita. Dijo que vendrá a verme cada noche, yo quería escucharlo de ella. Mi mamá me decía que ya no la vería más.*
¿Y tu abuelita está de viaje? ¿Vive muy lejos? (Preguntó Fernando).
No, ella está en el cielo y allá usan estos teléfonos. (Respondió la niña)
