Hahaha, yes the blue bottles got me a few times, but not as bad as one of our lecturers at Papillon as she stepped onto a big Manta Ray in the shallows and he got her in her right foot. Hospital case and battling to walk for a few weeks now.
Nature changes the beaches constantly and recently the stormy seas opened the sandbanks that blocked a river in Kleinmond. So now after a few years the river is connected to the sea again.

Hope your friend feels better, only time I have seen what we thought was a sand shark was my son and one of the dogs romping shallow sea, both took off when it moved underfoot, it was pretty big.
When rivers break through it is healthy for sea life and rivers.

I used to swim often in the sea during our annual holiday time in Durban and yes, blue bottles were always a problem.

Good the sea breached into the river it helps the fish life breeding grounds normally.
