This piece is really interesting though. I'm familiar enough with John Cage and that the original 4:33 is an experimental silent piece, so to hear a tribute to him that is... well... not silent is interesting. Funny thing is that I heard this one on his Late Night Tales mix a few years ago and didn't really make the connection between this and 4:33 until now. John Cage is really known more for his ideas than his music personally, but his ideas inform a lot of what I love about experimental and ambient music. His whole 4:33 piece is the inspiration behind much of Brian Eno's work, Music For Airports in particular.
So, it doesn't surprise me that Nils Frahm called this recording a bit of a joke. In fact, here's the quote from him "This rework could be considered a joke. I sat at the piano in silence and worked from there. I listened and took in the atmosphere and this is what came out of it. Of course, it doesn’t do Cage justice, but it was more fun playing rather than sitting in silence."
I could talk about why I enjoy this so much, but I think the real fun of this is discussing intent and silence in music. If I had to suggest something that reminds me of this, I would go for Max Richter's Sleep album which involves some of John Cage's concepts. The 8 hour piece is designed to be played as you sleep and I find myself going back to it regularly as an example of experimental music made with intent. Worth a listen, even if you aren't awake for it.
Also, thanks for the shout out on your post. I've been on an experimental kick as of late so it's cool finding more people getting in that vibe as well.
Thanks for bringing the story on 4:33, didn't know, as well as I didn't know about John Cage. I did know about Eno's Music for Airports, which has a great story as well, one that you very likely know, so I don't have to write it here :) Anybody else reading these comments and like to know the story: I suggest going to hivesearcher and typing in 'music for airports'. Am sure some HIVE post(s) will pop up explaining this story.
The 4 minutes 33-second silence is brilliant. Just watched one or two YT vids 🎶 🙇
Max Richter: 8 + hrs... fortunately not all with piano, since that would be an unimaginable monster session for that hands... I will for sure listen to this one. Not during my sleep, not sure if I'll recollect any of it when I do.
ps The Nils Frahm is an entire album. YT doesn't allow to share playlists in a visual manner:
the spotify link to the album:
Experimental: Absolutely, always like to listen music that is out of the ordinary 🎶
I will repeat you WOW! Simply wow! Not a creative start of a comment, but that is Nils' music that is so exceptional that leaves us speechless. If you compare with the music from your first spread the vibes, Annelie, Nils is some ten times up in creativity, meaning, deepness and effects. Ok, if I start to analyze the way of playing from a professional side I will miss out on the feeling, so I will give a few listenings to it.
The first listening was getting to know the ambient. Silence is the inspiration, you know that? (ok, that is my assumption, would need to ask Nils Frahm, can you make me an appointment with him?) John Cage has a composition called 4'33, I'm sure everybody heard of it...of it, as hear it is difficult. There are no sounds in 4'33. So, if this is a tribute to Cage and that composition, well the dense silence is the inspiration, that Nils colors here with his soft playing. More silence, and then again, it can be on repeat infinite times, as no beginning and end are required.
So, I am pretty sure Nils plays here in an upright kind of a piano, maybe using some sordine, like the soft pedal, but also there are bright notes, where no soft pedal is used. the soft pedal is also called una corda, as in the grand piano it moves the whole mechanism at one side, so instead of three strings the hammer hits just two, it is moved by one string. In an upright piano, the mechanism is brought closer to the strings while pressing the soft pedal, so the hammer doesn't have so much power to hit the strings. ie the sound is softer. Ok, forget all of this hahah and just enjoy ;)
Anyway, great track, and hope I can get to listen to the whole album. Also, I am happy, very happy to see your invites!!! Will not mention each one here again, but I hope all peeps can get the vibe and spread it ;)
P.S. yes, two posts more to respond to! whatever order doesn't really matter :))
And THANK YOU for inviting me too 🙌 for sure, I will choose to play the JOhn Cage 4'33 piece 😅 but, I will have to practice a lot ;D
Nils and Annelie: No comparison, of course! but but but Annelie is Dutch, a fellow citizen, and just starting (sort of), so yes, she is worth it to mention and to listen to from time to time 😉
John Cage: Also you know about this guy! Wow, I feel stupid... Ah well, I have all of you to tell me the great stories behind the music, so I can just concentrate on finding some interesting pieces to share 🎶
Piano: you seem to know a lot about piano's? You have any history with that instrument? {😂} Thanks for the explanations, again! 😉
Album: just click the YT/Spotify link below the YT share, those links will bring you to the playlist for the album at the respective services.
Posts: Two only? Order: Very important! Remember? The '1st' project really needed to be posted before an upcoming one for which I still plan to create a little video with my own recorded material. Order is everything.... Ah well, Chaos is cool shit as well 😂 😂 😂
I didnt say not to listen to Annelie, of course :) And she is worth mentioning, and she was the first to come to spread the vibes post. Without her, no challenge not challenge would start. So Annelie no.1 but then we can make a gradation, and we had Lanoche, Etapp Kyle, Peter van Hoesen, Ricardo Villalobos, Nils, Cio D'or and again Nils. Again piano? why not oboe ;D
Ok, I am challenging you, find an oboist that is mixing with electronic music, or experimental or whatever different! More chaos to come! :)
Yeah, John Cage, already studied at the Uni about him a bit. No, no. Stories you to tell us too + find interesting music too!! You will not get lazy, would you?
You have any history with that instrument? {😂}
Sort of 🤣 Hope not just history, but future too 😁
Album: just click the YT/Spotify link below the YT share, those links will bring you to the playlist for the album at the respective services.
Did, already yesterday ;) But, made the comment just for this track. The other link I opened after the comment was made.
Posts: Two only?
According to my count, for the invites in my posts. But, you should 🖌 outside as much as you want. So not just two posts should come, go and make hive happy 😇
...Lanoche, Etapp Kyle, Peter van Hoesen, Ricardo Villalobos, Nils, Cio D'or and again Nils.
You remember all that? WOW... Or you checked back into the posts? Also WOW! {LOL}
...find an oboist that is mixing with electronic music, or experimental or whatever different! More chaos to come!
Wow, that IS a complex and not easy one. Uhm, have to think about this. Who knows, I may be able to come up with something
But, made the comment just for this track.
All good... though my share was the album, but YT is always strange in that sense and Spotify share doesn't really work unless its a playlist, and with PeakD HIVE UI
You remember all that? WOW... Or you checked back into the posts? Also WOW! {LOL}
Both 🤣
You know I remember well... so I knew them, just had to check the Etapp Kyle and Peter van Hoesen correct names, the others were here. And it is not so much, ask me if I remember after some 100th spread the vibes edition from you. ;D Well, that would be a challenge 😁
That's indeed a challenge, will need to create about 96 posts to get to 100. I shall get on with it quickly, otherwise, it'll not be finished in the next decade 😆
Do a win-win play. If you create every day one spread the vibes post, in three months your HP can grow a bit :)
Now, only thing = just set an algorithm on the new racing machine that can do it instead of you, or while you are sleeping enable it to recollect telepathically some music and info from your dreams and in the morning - the post is instantly done ✅

I use Powerpoint. And then GIMP to take the paper background away. Probably all can be done in GIMP, but am a Powerpoint user already for as long as it exists.
