Music and musicians have suffered the most in the last two years that our world has spent, and we have longed for festivals during this time. METU Spring Festival has not been held for the last two years due to the coronavirus, but this year it continues from where it left off with the effect of the disease.
Dünyamızın geçirdiği son iki yılda en çok müzik ve müzisyenler zarar gördü ve bu süre boyunca festivallere hasret kaldık. ODTÜ Bahar Festivali de son iki yıldır koronavirüs gerekçesiyle yapılamadı fakat bu yıl hastalığın etkisinin kırılmasıyla kaldığı yerden devam ediyor.
First of all, I think I should tell you about METU and METU Spring Festival. METU is one of Turkey's most important international universities and has a large campus located in the center of Ankara. Due to the fact that METU is a public school, the children of families whose economic situation is not good can also pass the university selection exam and get an education. I am honored with my school as someone who started his career by graduating from the Civil Engineering department of this school. During my studentship at METU, I had the chance to gain many different experiences besides technical education, and many of these experiences have a special place in my life.
Öncelikle sizlere ODTÜ'den ve ODTÜ Bahar Festivali'nden bahsetmem gerektiğini düşünüyorum. ODTÜ, Türkiye'nin uluslarası ölçekteki en önemli üniversitelerinden birisi ve Ankara'nın merkezi konumunda yer alan büyük bir kampüse sahip. ODTÜ'nün devlet okulu olması sebebiyle ekonomik durumu iyi olmayan ailelerin çocukları da üniversite seçme sınavında başarı göstererek burayı kazanabiliyor ve eğitim alabiliyorlar. Ben de bu okulun İnşaat Mühendisliği bölümünden mezun olarak mesleğe başlayan birisi olarak okulumla onur duyuyorum. ODTÜ'de geçirdiğim öğrencilik boyunca teknik eğitimin yanısıra birçok farklı deneyim edinme şansım da oldu ve bu deneyimlerin birçoğunun benim hayatımda özel birer yerleri var.
One of the most important things I experienced at METU was the annual spring festivals. The spring festivals, the first of which were organized in 1988, are an organization that makes many contributions to the university campus and the city life in Ankara. During the spring festivals, outdoor music performance stages are set up all over the campus centre, political marches are organized, theater plays are staged, talks are held, and a fairground is opened. In addition, all student societies organize events where they can introduce themselves and thousands of students have fun freely.
ODTÜ'de deneyimlediğim en önemli şeylerden birisi ise her yıl düzenlenen bahar festivalleri idi. İlki 1988 yılında organize edilen bahar festivalleri üniversite kampüsüne ve Ankara'daki kent hayatına birçok katkılar sağlayan bir organizayon. Bahar festivallerinde kampüs merkezinin dört bir yanına açıkhava müzik performans sahneleri kuruluyor, politik yürüyüşler düzenleniyor, tiyatro oyunları sahneleniyor, söyleşiler düzenleniyor, panayır alanı açılıyor. Ayrıca tüm öğrenci toplulukları kendilerini tanıtabildikleri etkinlikler düzenliyor ve binlerce öğrenci özgürce eğleniyor.
When the evening comes, the excitement reaches its peak. For the evening concerts that will start at the METU Stadium, the entire campus begins to flow into the stadium at around 19.00. There is great enthusiasm in this stadium, which hosts approximately 10000 people. I must say that seeing this enthusiasm alive is an indescribable feeling. Thousands of people, whose average age is in their twenties, sing at the same time as the musicians on the stage, and this magnificent ambiance fascinates everyone. For these reasons, I can say that attending the METU International Spring Festival is a passion for students, academics, employees and graduates.
Akşam vakti geldiğinde ise heyecan doruğa ulaşıyor. Zira ODTÜ Stadyumu'nda başlayacak akşam konserleri için tüm kampüs 19.00 sularında stadyuma akmaya başlıyor. Yaklaşık 10000 kişiyi ağırlayan bu stadyumda büyük bir coşku yaşanıyor. Bu coşkuyu canlı canlı görmenin tarifsiz bir duygu olduğunu söylemeliyim. Yaş ortalaması yirmilerde olan binlerce insan sahneye çıkan müzisyenlerle aynı anda şarkıları söylüyorlar ve bu muhteşem ambiyans herkesi büyülüyor. Bu sebeplerle ODTÜ Uluslarrası Bahar Şenliği'ne katılmak öğrenciler, akademisyenler, çalışanlar ve mezunlar için tam bir tutkudur diyebilirim.
If you've just noticed, I used the term international. This term is the official name of the METU Spring Festival because groups from outside Turkey can also organize events at the festival. In addition, international students who continue their education at METU also open stands and organize different ethnic events to promote their countries and cultures. These give the festival international status.
Az önce dikkat ettiyseniz uluslararası ibaresini kullandım. Bu tabir ODTÜ Bahar Festivali'nin resmi adıdır çünkü festivalde Türkiye dışından gruplar da etkinlikler düzenleyebiliyorlar. Ayrıca ODTÜ'de eğitim hayatını sürdüren uluslararası statüdeki öğrenciler de kendi ülkelerini ve kültürlerini tanıtmak için standlar açıp birbirinden farklı etnik etkinlikler düzenliyorlar. Bunlar festivali uluslararası statüye çıkarıyor.
Let's come to the spring festival held this year (last week)...
The 2022 International METU Spring Festival started on Wednesday, May 25, in the morning, and the 5-day festival ended with concerts on the night of Sunday, May 29. It was organized as the 34th festival this year. Since three years have passed since the last festival (2019), I think the longing for the spring festival created a huge turnout. Even those who have been working at METU for thirty years have often stated that they have never seen such a crowd and density before. I also attended the events and evening concert on the second day of the festival with my wife. We made a real effort to find seating in the stadium and we could hardly find a seat for two. After a while, the legendary music group called Yeni Türkü (New Song, from 1977 to now) took the stage. The lead singer of the group, Derya Köroğlu, is a musician who graduated from METU Faculty of Architecture. For this reason, he gave a very impressive performance on stage and enchanted everyone for about two hours.
Gelelim bu yıl (geçen hafta) düzenlenen bahar festivaline...
2022 Uluslararası ODTÜ Bahar Festivali 25 Mayıs Çarşamba günü sabah sularında başladı ve 5 gün süren festival 29 Mayıs Pazar günü gecesi yapılan konserlerle sona erdi. Bu yıl 34. festival olarak düzenlendi. En son festivalden (2019) bu tarafa aradan üç yıl geçtiği için bahar festivaline duyulan özlem çok büyük bir katılımın oluşmasını sağladı diye düşünüyorum. ODTÜ'de otuz yıldır çalışanlar bile bu kadar kalabalığı ve yoğunluğu daha önce hiç görmediklerini sıklıkla ifade ettiler. Ben de karımla birlikte fetivalin ikinci günü yapılan etkinliklerine ve akşam konserine katıldım. Stadyumda oturacak yer bulabilmek için gerçekten büyük çaba sarf ettik ve zorlukla iki kişilik bir yer bulabildik. Biz oturduktan bir süre sonra da Yeni Türkü isimli efsanevi müzik grubu sahneye çıktı. Grubun solisti Derya Köroğlu da ODTÜ Mimarlık Fakültesi mezunu bir müzisyen. Bu sebeple sahnede çok etkileyici bir performans gösterdi ve yaklaşık iki saat boyunca herkesi mest ettiler.
After Yeni Türkü, the famous musician Hayko Cepkin took the stage. Hayko Cepkin makes music between metal and rock and often uses hard elements in his stage performance. For example, from time to time, fireworks were thrown into the sky from the stage, and other than that, various demonstration elements were used. Although I like a couple of his songs very much, I have to express that I do not enjoy Hayko Cepkin's performance in general. It's a bit too far from my understanding of music. :) The performance of Yeni Türkü was more than enough for me.
Yeni Türkünün ardından ünlü müzisyen Hayko Cepkin sahne aldı. Hayko Cepkin, metal ve rock müzik arası bir müzik yapıyor ve sahne performansında sıklıkla sert öğeler kullanıyor. Mesela arada bir sahneden gökyüzüne havai fişek atılıyor ve bunun dışında da çeşitli gösteri unsurları kullanılıyordu. Bir iki şarkısını çok sevmekle birlikte genel olarak Hayko Cepkin'in performansından keyif almadığımı ifade etmeliyim. Biraz da benim müzik anlayışıma çok uzak geliyor. :) Yeni Türkü'nün performansı bana fazlasıyla yetti.
Unfortunately, I did not have the chance to attend the festival on other days, but I was informed that the same enthusiasm continued. In short, the 2022 METU International Spring Festival will hold an important place in my memory as it is the first METU Festival to be held after Covid-19 and it creates great excitement. Diğer günler ne yazık ki festivale katılma şansı bulamadım fakat aynı coşkunun devam ettiği bilgisini aldım. Kısacası 2022 ODTÜ Uluslararası Bahar Festivali Covid-19 sonrası ilk düzenlenen ODTÜ Festivali olması ve büyük heyecan yaratması sebebiyle hatıramda önemli bir yer tutacak. Dear @mipiano first of all thank you for your nice comment. Yes, my musical taste is quite different from Hayko Cepkin (I can guess that your musical style is quite different from him :) ) but I was happy to see my student friends having fun. Although I have a hard time listening... :))
Overall it was quite an exciting festival. I'd also like to thank the Q-inspired community for giving such ample opportunity to the story of the music.
I had almost forgotten about how festivals paused because of Covid 19...This one is so packed and looks really amazing..I loved it and the videos
