Hola Hivers! hoy les traigo una reseña/análisis de uno de mis films favoritos, Wiplash es una película dirigida por el asombroso Damien Chazelle, protagonizada por Miles Teller y J.K Simmons (un asombroso JK Simmons por cierto) y una banda sonora hecha por Justin Hurwitz. Les seré sincero, esta película la he visto en mi vida al rededor de 3 casi 4 veces, lo interesante es que, la he visto en varios puntos de mi vida y me ha hecho reflexionar acerca de ella arduamente, y como esta semana, me he acercado bastante al jazz (otra vez) he decidido traer este análisis. Una película llena de drama, de intensidad, de ansiedad, y sobretodo, de un buen jazz (no hay que negar que tiene buena música.)
Hi Hivers! Today I bring you a review/analysis of one of my favorite films, Wiplash is a film directed by the amazing Damien Chazelle, starring Miles Teller and J.K Simmons (an amazing JK Simmons by the way) and a soundtrack made by Justin Hurwitz. I'll be honest with you, I've seen this movie in my life around 3 almost 4 times, the interesting thing is, I've seen it in several points of my life and it made me reflect about it hard, and as this week, I've come pretty close to jazz (again) I decided to bring this analysis. A film full of drama, intensity, anxiety, and above all, good jazz (there is no denying that it has good music.)
Sinopsis- Synopsis
Andrew Neiman(Miles Teller) es un baterista joven que estudia en el conservatorio Schaffer, Andrew quiere ser el mejor baterista que haya jamas en la historia, y para esto busca de obtenerlo sin importar el costo físico o emocional para cumplir este objetivo. Andrew logra entrar en la Studio Band dirigida por Terrence Fletcher (J.K Simmons) dicha orquesta, es la más prestigiosa del conservatorio, pero esto na va ser suficiente para lograr el reconocieinto de su éxito en la banda, y su obsesión lleva hasta el punto de que se destruye física y mentalmente.
Andrew Neiman (Miles Teller) is a young drummer studying at the Schaffer Conservatory. Andrew wants to be the best drummer ever, and he seeks to achieve this goal regardless of the physical or emotional cost of doing so. Andrew manages to get into the Studio Band directed by Terrence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons), the most prestigious orchestra at the conservatory, but this will not be enough to achieve the recognition of his success in the band, and his obsession leads to the point that he destroys himself physically and mentally.
Análisis-Analysis
En la vida siempre oímos que tenemos que tener un objetivo, una meta que cumplir o (en pocos casos) un Sueño que lograr, si me preguntarán de que trata esta película, en vez de decir la sinopsis que escribí anteriormente, les diría, que se trata de un baterista que quiere lograr sus sueños. La película comienza con una gran gran escena, en la que podemos ver a Andrew ensayando (solo, voy a destacar esto porque nos servirá para lo que viene más adelante), cuando llega Fletcher (con una escogencia de planos muy imponente retratado desde los pies a la cabeza, como si de un Titán se tratara) y le pide un doble time swing (un ritmo de jazz que es base en este genero musical) y Andrew se esfuerza hasta que no puede lograrlo y Fletcher se va. Ahora se preguntaran ¿Porque les estoy contando est escena? Por qué de esto se trata la película, de todo el viaje de Andrew por lograr sus metas, hasta que lo consigue.
In life we always hear that we have to have an objective, a goal to achieve or (in few cases) a Dream to achieve, if you ask me what this movie is about, instead of saying the synopsis I wrote before, I would say, that it is about a drummer who wants to achieve his dreams. The movie begins with a great scene, in which we can see Andrew rehearsing (alone, I will emphasize this because it will serve us for what comes later), when Fletcher arrives (with a very imposing choice of shots portrayed from head to toe, as if it were a Titan) and asks for a double time swing (a jazz rhythm that is the basic of this musical genre) and Andrew struggles until he can not achieve it and Fletcher leaves. Now you may wonder why I'm telling you this scene? Why is this what the movie is about, Andrew's whole journey to achieve his goals, until he does.
Como músico que soy, esta película refleja mucha de las cosas que uno como músico tiene que lograr para conseguir un sueño, un lugar, una oportunidad en este mundo. La vida de Andrew no es fácil, Andrew es una persona solitaria llena de inseguridades, y que lo único que sabe hace es tocar la bateria, y cada día Andrew se esfuerza, por lograrlo. Tiene una relación muy cercana con su padre, pero no tiene amigos, y como Andrew dice: "No les vi nunca la utilidad", Andrew lo único que quiere es, un puesto en la banda de Fletcher , y cuando lo consigue, nos podemos dar cuenta de las cosas que va a tener que perder para seguir cumpliendo sus metas, una vida llena de estrés, una vida llena angustia y ansiedad.
As a musician, this film reflects many of the things one has to achieve as a musician to get a dream, a place, a chance in this world. Andrew's life is not easy, Andrew is a lonely person full of insecurities, and the only thing he knows how to do is play the drums, and every day Andrew strives, to achieve it. He has a very close relationship with his father, but he has no friends, and as Andrew says: "I never saw the point of them", Andrew only wants a position in Fletcher's band, and when he gets it, we can realize the things he will have to lose in order to keep on achieving his goals, a life full of stress, a life full of anguish and anxiety.
La personalidad de Fletcher es la de un ser arrogante, que sabe lo que quiere, vanidoso, y que le gusta, exigir violentamente un resultado musical (cosa que en la realidad existe, pero gracias a los nuevos tiempos, los directores que son así son pocos), este personaje sin duda que es una de los mejores antagonistas que han existido en la histori del cine, personalmente se me hace muy parecido a doctor House, Fletcher siempre sabe donde están las inseguridades de sus músicos y como hacer que estas inseguridades le jueguen a su "favor" utilizando un terror psicológico como arma para destrozarlos y que quede un resultado musical o que las personas solo se vayan llorando. En Andrew esto juega mucho en contra debido, a su personalidad insegur y obsesiva, Fletcher lo lleva al borde del colpaso emocional haciendo que este simplemente se olvide de su vida personal, incluso, ocasionándole una grave falta de sociabilidad. Haciendo que este, solo vaya a su casa a estudiar, sin tener amigos, novia, o si quiera una buena relación con su padre, literalmente su mundo es la batería.
Fletcher's personality is that of an arrogant being, who knows what he wants, is vain, and likes to violently demand a musical result (which in reality exists, but thanks to the new times, directors who are like that are few), this character is undoubtedly one of the best antagonists that have existed in the history of cinema, Personally, I find it very similar to Dr. House, Fletcher always knows where the insecurities of his musicians are and how to make these insecurities play into his "hands" by using psychological terror as a weapon to destroy them so that there is a musical result or people just go away crying. In Andrew this plays against him because of his insecure and obsessive personality, Fletcher brings him to the brink of emotional collapse making him simply forget about his personal life, even causing him a serious lack of sociability. By making him go home alone to study, without friends, a girlfriend, or even a good relationship with his father, his world is literally the drums.
Para lograr un sueño o una carrera musical, ¿es necesario sangrar hasta que no quede nada de uno? / To achieve a dream or a musical career, is it necessary to bleed until there is nothing left of ourselves?
Durate de la película, el director nos hace preguntarnos esto, y es una pregunta bastante importante para la vida. Siempre se nos dice que para lograr algo hay que derramar sangre,sudor, y lágrimas; pero en realidad, ¿Es necesario llegar a estos extremos? . A mi criterio no, obviamente para alcanzar una meta hay que esforzarse, al máximo, hay que estar muy enfocado, y sobretodo tener mucha constancia. Cosa que en la película lo degeneran, ya que ser constantes (por lo menos en la carrera musical) es estudiar, y estudiar y estudiar, pero no hasta sangrar, no hay que apartarse de la sociedad para lograr el éxito ni mucho menos estar en un lugar donde, la persona que te tiene que motivar, te hace la vida trizas y destruye todo tu estado emocional. Fletcher en la conversación que tiene con Andrew despues de que este es botado de la universidad, le dice: "Las personas que se desmotivan no tienen futuro" esto es totalmente falso, para ser un buen músico, parte de lo necesario es tener alguien que te inspire y te haga ser mejor de la mejor manera. Es claro que hay mucha gente, que no tienen esa suerte (yo lo viví) pero si estas en un lugar tóxico, ¿vas a crecer? Si, pero nunca dejarás de estar asustado, ni de despreciarte...
During the film, the director makes us ask ourselves this, and it's a pretty important question for life. Obviously, to reach a goal you have to make an effort, to the maximum, you have to be very focused, and above all, you have to have a lot of constancy. Something that degenerates in the film, since to be constant (at least in your music career) is to study, and study and study, but not to the point of bleeding. You don't have to move away from society to achieve success, much less be in a place where the person who has to motivate you tears your life apart and destroys your whole emotional state. Fletcher in the conversation he has with Andrew after he is thrown out of college, he says: "People who are unmotivated have no future" this is totally false, to be a good musician, part of what is necessary is to have someone who inspires you and makes you better in the best way. It is clear that there are many people, who are not that lucky (I lived it) but if you are in a toxic place, are you going to grow up? Yes, but you'll never stop being scared, or despising yourself...
Al final Fletcher, solo sirve de motivación para Andrew, para seguir adelante, para luchar consigo mismo, y sobretodo para darse cuenta que la vida no es fácil, que todo llega con trabajo, que lo más importante es NUNCA desmayar, siempre es importante prepararse, estudiar mucho, tener una buena autoestima de ti, personas que te apoyen y crean en ti, y perseguir tus sueños de la manera más bella y sana posible. Un sueño no tiene que costarte la vida, y si lo hace, ¿Con que vida vas a disfrutar de ese sueño?.
In the end Fletcher serves as a motivation for Andrew, to keep going, to fight with himself, and above all to realize that life is not easy, that everything comes with work, that the most important thing is to NEVER give up, it is always important to prepare yourself, to study hard, to have a good self-esteem of you, people who support and believe in you, and to pursue your dreams in the most beautiful and healthy way possible. A dream doesn't have to cost you your life, and if it does, whose life are you going to enjoy that dream with?
Una película, para disfrutar de la dirección, llena de expresionismo, de unos primeros planos bellos, de una banda sonora impecable y de unos actorazos de maravilla, vayan veánla y disfruten de un buen cine de autor, sin duda alguna Demian Chazalle se ha convertido en unos de mis directores predilectos con esta super obra.
A film, to enjoy the direction, full of expressionism, beautiful close-ups, an impeccable soundtrack and great actors, go see it and enjoy a good auteur cinema, no doubt Demian Chazalle has become one of my favorite directors with this super work.

esta peli la he visto un par de veces en la tv un poco incompleta, realmente me parecio super intensa, pero no la entendia por completo. gracias por explicarla!!!
Creo que esta película podría haber sido mucho más interesante, pero aún así, vale la pena verla.
Es una película excelente, intensa, cruda, que muestra lo lejos que puede llegar un artista para lograr la tan ansiada "perfección" en su área y también el deseo de complacer a los que se creen reyes en su campo. Fletcher con su frase "not quite my tempo" en varias ocasiones, hace que Andrew se desgaste cada vez más y hasta sangre por ello. Esta película me recordó mucho a El Cisne Negro. La protagonista, Nina, también se obsesiona tanto por ser la mejor bailarina que termina perdiéndose a sí misma.
