During his period of research, Snook claimed to have converted to Islam, adopting the name Abdul Kafar. His conversion supposedly enabled him to access Mecca, witness the pilgrimage rituals firsthand, and observe Muslim practices directly. Many Muslims who encountered him believed him to be a genuine Muslim, which allowed him to blend seamlessly into the religious landscape of Mecca at the time. However, some sources suggest that Snook's Islamic façade was merely a cover to gain unrestricted access to sacred sites for research purposes. The true nature of his intentions remains uncertain, and as with many clandestine operations, only Allah knows his true motives.
