Heading to the west coast for a client event. The flight options are mostly one or two stops. And as you said some with ridiculously long layover. No thanks. There were only two nonstops and those are around 5:30am. However, the nonstop means a less than 3 hour flight which is worth the early hour. Plus early flights usually leave on time without flight delays. So that is a double bonus.

Unless you get a flight like we had this summer. We were going to a convention in Columbus, Ohio. We expected to get there a little before noon. We had one change of flights - Houston Hobby to DFW then on to Columbus. We got their bright and early to catch that early flight. We were on the plane, next in line to take off, when they closed DFW due to weather. We ended up having to deplane and wait. By then, we missed our connecting flight. Flights being as full as they are now, we ended up getting into Columbus at 9:30 pm. We were like the walking dead. The next morning we were up bright and early to get our booth set up.
Ugh, no fun at all. I typically fly first thing. Which means I am at the airport as early as 3:30am. I'd rather sleep on the plane and get where I'm going with no delays. Plus that early in the morning most folks are quiet and keep to themselves. A much better experience overall.
