Anyone who thinks a government will protect their freedom is missing the whole point of government. It literally exists to limit what people can do.

Maybe the current governments, but it doesn't have to be that way. The main purpose of a government is #protecting people. Part of that is by limiting them, (you don't want murderers to walk in the streets,) but you can't have both freedom & security at 100% at the same time.

The main purpose of a government is #protecting people.

I used to think this. Then I came to the realization that the purpose quoted above is the on-ramp to the path where the people to be protected instead get dominated. We can do better.

I still think this even though I know it ends with the people to protect being dominated, because I know there's a chance we reach a point where that doesn't happen anymore. I don't want to forget the main purpose governments are built because we're building them wrong.

The thing is, you can never be 100% assured of either. Laws don't stop people from committing crimes. With or without government, your freedom and security will be limited by other people trying to take what you have.

Yes, but I know what a "Lawless" place looks like & it's even worse than governments' "controlled security."

Now, if you're talking about something like China where you can't think unless the government allows you to, I agree with you, but it doesn't have to be like that.

Plenty of lawless places have governments, and even the ones who don't act 'officially' are governed by the criminals in charge.

I'm not saying that government is inherently bad, just that its very existence is based on limiting freedom. A big portion of the population isn't really interested in freedom... it's too much responsibility.

Yeah, that's it... The majority of people don't want freedom.

The majority of people never even think about it, until they want something they can't have. If they can sleep well, their bellies are full, and they don't get too bored, they are as free as they want or need to be.

Yes, although this is partially true for developed countries, it is mostly true for underdeveloped countries.

Governments exist to pass laws, and every law imposes punishment for doing something, or for not doing something. The main difference is the style of punishment.

And some of them do not apply these penalties...

The best a government can do is prevent A from violating the rights of B, and vice versa. This is better than existing to "protect the people".

We will always need a way to govern ourselves. This is part of being social beings. However, that does not mean we need a political form of government to allow us to govern ourselves. For an example, look no further than the family unit.
