Welcome back to my blog where I usually post selections of pictures from my trips and discoveries. Today I want to share with the Hive community a series of shots I took during my days in Rotterdam and Oostvoorne, a small town in province of Brielle.
My boyfriend has recently moved to Netherlands for work; as you may know, distance relationship is hard, especially when you are young. But this work experience abroad is a great chance for him to grow professionally and personally, besides leaving abroad for a period has always been one of his biggest dreams since he was a kid. In the end, I am happy for him, but I can't hide how tough it is for the two of us apart. Having said this, there are of course bright side to the distance: first of all, I happen to go and visit him, and explore places where I would hardly go otherwise.
I went to visit my boyfriend the weekend of Halloween, and I spent almost a full week there; during the weekend we traveled to Rotterdam, and visit the beautiful city that is quite small and perfect to walk around.
We saw the famous Cube Houses, which are the symbol of Rotterdam and, I have to say, they are extremely peculiar; I had never seen anything like this before!
The project was designed by architect Piet Blom who meant to create a tree-like design of houses attached to one the other, to create the shape of a forest.
The project began in the late '70s and currently people and families live in those houses, even though one of them is functioning as a museum-house for tourists to see how the interior of these particular houses is organized.

Honestly, I am not sure if I would like to live in such a strange building; I'd probably have a sense of dizziness most of the time! What about you? Would you live in a cube house?

Walking around Rotterdam you will discover a number of different attractions, such as the reproduction of a wind mill, originally built in the 1700s but unfortunately got destroyed by a fire.
It was reconstructed again in the XIX century but during the Second World War suffered from the bombing and got partially destroyed again; luckily enough, the town of Rotterdam, and the citizens who were very attached to that mill, made it restored in the '80s.
The Molen de Distilleerketel is now only a touristic attraction and hosts a nice cafeteria inside. Also, there is a tiny souvenir shop where to purchase a pair of nice Dutch clogs... lovely!

To reach the mill or the cube houses you would need to walk a lot around different neighborhoods, and see how different the city is depending on where you are.
The area where you find the mill is the most ancient neighborhood of Rotterdam and also the only one that remains and looks like it was originally built; indeed, the rest of the city, due to the bombing of WWII, was completely reconstructed from scratch.
Personally, I liked Delfshaven more than the other areas of Rotterdam because it reminds of a lost time, with colorful buildings along the canals and ancient mercantile sailing boats.
Also, this area has the presence of parks, gardens, and porches where the colors of Fall take over anything else of your sight, and you can't but take pictures of the foliage!
Walking away from Delfshaven towards the more modern part of the city, along the canals, you will encounter a number of shops of artisans and antiquarians, which are very popular in Rotterdam.
Also, a number of protestant churches is very present as indeed, the entire area is still very residential. I found the architectures beautiful, and typically Northern-European, surely!
Last but not least, in Delfshaven you'll find the Pilgrim Fathers' Church which is dedicated to the Pilgrim Fathers, Englishmen, who had found the Dutch Protestantism in Leiden; they then left from Delfshaven to the New World to worship their religion.

Taking about churches, you don't wanna miss absolutely the Cathedral of Rotterdam, the Churh of Great St. Lawrence - "Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk": [//]:# (!pinmapple 51.92150 lat 4.48546 long d3scr). It is MASSIVE and... only open in specific hours, check out the website beforehand or you'll end up being stuck outside like we did, sadly!
Keeping on exploring the city, we walked to see some interesting attractions and a nice skyline of Rotterdam.
All of the following places are basically in the same area, and they are so huge that is impossible to skip them!
The monument to the victims who died at sea during the Second World War: De Boeg (The Bow), a National Monument for the Merchant Navy: [//]:# (!pinmapple 51.91231 lat 4.48448 long d3scr)
Famous Erasmusbrug, the bridge named after Erasmus of Rotterdam; this bridge is a true landmark of the city and it's got the nickname "The Swan" for obvious reasons. I suggest walking on the bridge but also below it: you'll hear the sound of the traffic in such a weird echo, super cool! Here is the bridge: [//]:# (!pinmapple 51.91247 lat 4.48407 long d3scr)
From The Swan you can see the modern side of Rotterdam and the Kop van Zuid, the so called "Manhattan of Rotterdam", where the KPN Telecom Office tower stands out as the wonderful skyscraper designed by famous Italian architect Renzo Piano (yes, as Italian, I was very proud to get to know this!).
At night, Rotterdam switches mood completely and it becomes just like a "never never land"; this city is also very popular for its high fashion shops, and stores of all sorts.
If you love markets you cannot miss the market-gallery, "Gallery of Markthal". It is such a unique building: a gallery meant to host both apartments and a an endless number of food shops, markets, and restaurants from all over the worlds.
I got absolutely enchanted by the atmosphere inside the gallery: the murals are coved by mesmerizing artworks, the apartments lay within the thick walls of the gallery itself, making it a attraction for the tourists. The windows of the apartments are visible from within the gallery, as you walk in and through the markets and food shops.
There are so many different food shops there that you can't really go out from the gallery without tasting some deliciousness!
You can find restaurants of all kinds, where even the designs of the furniture is peculiar! Dutch delicacy and exotic food are equally worth a try, you won't regret it!

Not only big cities!
Rotterdam is beautiful, nothing to comment on this. But unfortunately, we were not always there. Actually we never were! My boyfriend, the first period of his stay in Netherlands, was living at a hotel near his work place; the accommodation and everything was paid by the company, of course. But the living there was a real pity.
Unfortunately, there was not much to do. When I was there, and during the day he was at work, I didn't really have much to do. The weather was rainy, cold and windy most of the time, but this didn't put me down: I wanted to go and explore, and so did I!
The landscape was beautiful most of the time I was walking around the area of the hotel, which was near Brielle, in a very small town called Oostvoorne. The beach looked a little bit sad, and the sea too, because you couldn't really see the ocean, as your sight would be stopped by the presence of endless kilometers of construction sites.
The presence of a kindergarten was surpassingly out of place on such a shore... I wonder if, for the locals, all this "landscape" is good enough for the kids to go and play... may be even under dangerous pollution due to the construction sites drains.
In the end, I did enjoy walking and jogging around the area of Oostvoorne, because apart from the very industrial landscape over the sea, there is a natural reserve along the seaside, with woods, dunes and small streams. Also, I discovered later that the locals actually go visit this area during their holidays and days off, and over the weekend the entire site is full of people going for MTB paths, and hiking tours. Your Majesty, Amsterdam
Last but not least, I would like to end this post with five shots I took a day in Amsterdam, where we went on a Saturday morning to meet up with a couple of friends who happened to be in Netherlands at the same time.
You could ask yourself: why only 5 shots in Amsterdam and so many in Rotterdam, which is, in the end, a minor city compared to the capital?
Well, there are two answers to this questions: first, when we went this time it was raining and cold most of the time and we didn't really have the chance to visit anything worthy, and we spent most our time just walking around.
Second, I still have a bunch of pictures I need to give light to, and those are absolutely great shots of Amsterdam where we first went in Spring... I promise I will share them soon!

Bentornati nel mio blog dove di solito pubblico una selezione di immagini dei miei viaggi e delle mie scoperte. Oggi voglio condividere con la community di Hive una serie di scatti che ho fatto durante le mie giornate a Rotterdam e Oostvoorne, una piccola cittadina nella provincia di Brielle.
Il mio ragazzo si è recentemente trasferito nei Paesi Bassi per lavoro; come forse saprete, le relazioni a distanza sono difficili, soprattutto quando sei giovane. Ma questa esperienza lavorativa all'estero rappresenta per lui una grande occasione di crescita professionale e personale, inoltre partire per un periodo all'estero è sempre stato uno dei suoi più grandi sogni fin da ragazzino. Alla fine sono felice per lui, ma non posso nascondere quanto sia dura per noi due stare separati. Detto questo, ci sono ovviamente dei lati positivi nella distanza: innanzitutto mi capita di andare a trovarlo, ed esplorare posti dove difficilmente andrei altrimenti.
Sono andata a trovare il mio ragazzo nel fine settimana di Halloween e ho trascorso lì quasi un'intera settimana; durante il fine settimana siamo andati a Rotterdam e abbiamo visitato la bellissima città che è piuttosto piccola e perfetta per passeggiare.
Abbiamo visto le famose Case cubiche, che sono il simbolo di Rotterdam e devo dire che sono estremamente particolari; Non avevo mai visto niente di simile prima!
Il progetto è stato ideato dall'architetto Piet Blom che intendeva creare un disegno ad albero di case attaccate l'una all'altra, per creare la forma di una foresta.
Il progetto è iniziato alla fine degli anni '70 e attualmente in quelle case vivono persone e famiglie, anche se una di queste funziona come una casa-museo per consentire ai turisti di vedere come sono gli interni e come sono organizzate queste case.

Onestamente, non sono sicura che mi piacerebbe vivere in un edificio così strano; Probabilmente avrei un senso di vertigini per la maggior parte del tempo! E tu? Vivresti in una casa cubica?

Passeggiando per Rotterdam scoprirai diverse attrazioni, come la riproduzione di un mulino a vento, originariamente costruito nel 1700 ma purtroppo distrutto da un incendio.
Fu ricostruito nuovamente nel XIX secolo ma durante la seconda guerra mondiale subì i bombardamenti e venne nuovamente parzialmente distrutto; fortunatamente il comune di Rotterdam, e i cittadini molto legati a quel mulino, lo fecero restaurare negli anni '80.
Il Molen de Distilleerketel ora è solo un'attrazione turistica e ospita una bella caffetteria al suo interno. Anche,c'è un piccolo negozio di souvenir dove acquistare un paio di simpatici zoccoli olandesi... adorabili!

Per raggiungere il mulino o le case cubiche dovresti camminare molto per i diversi quartieri e vedere quanto diversa è la città a seconda di dove ti trovi.
La zona in cui si trova il mulino è il quartiere più antico di Rotterdam e anche l'unico che rimane e sembra essere stato costruito come in origine; infatti il resto della città, a causa dei bombardamenti della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, fu completamente ricostruito ex novo.
Personalmente Delfshaven mi è piaciuto più delle altre zone di Rotterdam perché ricorda un tempo perduto, con edifici colorati lungo i canali e antiche barche a vela mercantili.
Inoltre, questa zona è caratterizzata dalla presenza di parchi, giardini e portici dove i colori dell'autunno prendono il sopravvento su qualsiasi altra cosa della tua vista e non puoi fare a meno di fotografare il fogliame!< /div>
Allontanandosi da Delfshaven verso la parte più moderna della città, lungo i canali, incontrerete una serie di botteghe di artigiani e antiquari, molto frequentate a Rotterdam.
Inoltre, sono molto presenti numerose chiese protestanti poiché, in effetti, l'intera zona è ancora molto residenziale. Ho trovato le architetture bellissime, e tipicamente nordeuropee, sicuramente!
Infine, ma non meno importante, a Delfshaven troverai la Chiesa dei Padri Pellegrini che è dedicata ai Padri Pellegrini, inglesi, che avevano fondato il protestantesimo olandese a Leida; poi partirono da Delfshaven per il Nuovo Mondo per professare la loro religione.
Subito prima della partenza, i Padri Pellegrini hanno pregato accanto alla Chiesa, che è proprio qui: [//]:# (!pinmapple 51.90869 lat 4.44890 long d3scr)
Per quanto riguarda le chiese, non potete perdervi assolutamente la Cattedrale di Rotterdam, la Chiesa del Gran San Lorenzo - "Grotta di Sint-Laurenskerk": [//]:# (! pinmapple 51.92150 lat 4.48546 lungo d3scr). È ENORME e... è aperta solo in orari specifici, controlla prima il sito web o rimarrai bloccato fuori come abbiamo fatto noi, purtroppo!
Continuando ad esplorare la città, abbiamo camminato per vedere alcune attrazioni interessanti e un bello skyline di Rotterdam.
Tutti i seguenti luoghi sono sostanzialmente nella stessa zona e sono così grandi che è impossibile saltarli!

Da The Swan si può vedere il lato moderno di Rotterdam e il Kop van Zuid, la cosiddetta "Manhattan di Rotterdam", dove la torre KPN Telecom Office svetta come il meraviglioso grattacielo progettato dal famoso architetto italiano Renzo Piano (sì, da italiana, mi sono inorgoglita non poco allo scoprire di questo aneddoto!).
Di notte, Rotterdam cambia completamente umore e diventa proprio come un paese dei balocchi; questa città è molto famosa anche per i suoi negozi di alta moda, e negozi di ogni genere.
Se ami i mercati non puoi perderti la galleria del mercato, "Gallery of Markthal". È un edificio davvero unico: una galleria pensata per ospitare sia appartamenti che un numero infinito di negozi di alimentari, mercati e ristoranti provenienti da tutto il mondo.
Sono rimasta assolutamente incantata dall'atmosfera all'interno della galleria: i murali sono ricoperti da opere d'arte affascinanti, gli appartamenti si trovano all'interno delle spesse mura della galleria stessa, rendendola un'attrazione per i turisti. Le finestre degli appartamenti sono visibili dall'interno della galleria, mentre entri e attraversi i mercati e i negozi di alimentari.
Ci sono così tanti banchi diversi di cibo da tutto il mondo che non puoi davvero uscire dalla galleria senza assaggiare qualche prelibatezza!
Puoi trovare ristoranti di tutti i tipi, dove anche il design dei mobili è peculiare! Vale la pena provare le prelibatezze olandesi e il cibo esotico, non te ne pentirai!

Non solo grandi città!
Rotterdam è bellissima, niente da commentare in merito. Ma sfortunatamente non siamo sempre stati lì. In realtà non lo siamo mai stati! Il mio ragazzo, nel primo periodo del suo soggiorno in Olanda, viveva in un albergo vicino al suo posto di lavoro; l'alloggio e tutto, ovviamente, sono stati pagati dalla compagnia. Ma vivere lì era un vero peccato.
Purtroppo non c'era molto da fare. Quando ero lì, e durante il giorno lui era al lavoro, non avevo molto da fare. Il tempo è stato piovoso, freddo e ventoso per la maggior parte del tempo, ma questo non mi ha abbattuta: volevo andare ad esplorare, e così feci!
Il paesaggio era bellissimo per la maggior parte del tempo in cui stavo passeggiando per la zona dell'hotel, che era vicino a Brielle, in una cittadina molto piccola chiamata Oostvoorne. La spiaggia sembrava un po' triste, e anche il mare,perché non potresti vedere veramente l'oceano, perché la tua vista verrebbe bloccata dalla presenza di infiniti chilometri di cantieri.
La presenza di un parco giochi era davvero fuori luogo su una riva del genere... chissà se per la gente del posto tutto questo "paesaggio" è abbastanza buono per far andare i bambini a giocare ...potrebbero trovarsi anche in condizioni di inquinamento pericoloso a causa degli scarichi dei cantieri.
Alla fine mi è piaciuto passeggiare e fare jogging nella zona di Oostvoorne, perché oltre al paesaggio molto industriale sul mare, c'è una riserva naturale lungo il mare, con boschi, dune e piccoli ruscelli. Inoltre, ho scoperto in seguito che la gente del posto visita effettivamente questa zona durante le vacanze e i giorni liberi, e durante il fine settimana l'intero sito è pieno di persone che vanno per percorsi MTB ed escursioni. Ultimo ma non meno importante, vorrei concludere questo post con cinque scatti che ho scattato una giornata ad Amsterdam, dove siamo andati un sabato mattina per incontrare una coppia di amici che per caso erano anche loro in Olanda in quegli stessi giorni.
Potresti chiederti: perché solo 5 scatti ad Amsterdam e così tanti a Rotterdam, che è, in fondo, una città minore rispetto alla capitale?
Bene, ci sono due risposte a questa domanda: primo, quando siamo andati questa volta pioveva e faceva freddo per la maggior parte del tempo e non abbiamo avuto la possibilità di visitare qualcosa che valesse la pena, e abbiamo trascorso la maggior parte del tempo semplicemente passeggiando.
In secondo luogo, ho ancora un sacco di foto a cui devo dare luce, e quelli sono scatti assolutamente fantastici di Amsterdam dove siamo stati per la prima volta in primavera... prometto che li condividerò presto!
