Francesca Benigni – Notturno , 2012 -olio su tela 60 x45
In modo inatteso e prematuro, e venuta a mancare pochi anni fa, lasciando il suo lavoro a metà e un senso di vuoto interiore, a chi ha avuto il piacere di conoscerla e stimarla. Vi parlo di Francesca Benigni, pittrice romana (Roma, 1957 – 2014). Giovanissima, dopo aver conseguito la maturità classica, nel 1976 si trasferisce a Parigi per affinare e migliorare le sue innate capacità artistiche. Qui frequenta l’école des Beaux Arts nella sezione Arts Plastiques e, presso la Società Française de Photographie, lezioni di fotografia. Successivamente, nel 1979, continua ad approfondire le sue conoscenze delle tecniche pittoriche, frequentando l’École Supérieure de Peinture Van der Kelees a Bruxelles, una delle più importanti scuole di decorazione europee. Nel 1987, frequenta i corsi di incisione alla Internationale Sommerakademie für Bildende Kunst a Salisburgo.

Durante il suo soggiorno a Parigi, fa uno di quegli incontri che le cambieranno la vita: conosce Lidia de Nobili, pittrice e scenografa affermata, collaboratrice, tra gli altri, di L. Visconti, G. Menotti, T. Richardson. Un incontro fecondo, che arricchirà profondamente la sua formazione artistica, orientandola verso lo studio dei classici e delle tecniche pittoriche.

Ma quell’incontro non fu solo un'opportunità di crescita personale: le spalancò anche le porte del mondo teatrale, portandola a collaborare con registi del calibro di A. Arias, G. Menotti e J.M. Simon, nonché con il rinomato scenografo F. Palamidese. Parallelamente, la sua attività si estese alla decorazione d’interni, affrescando prestigiose dimore in collaborazione con affermati architetti come R. Mongiardino, E. Carcano e T. Facella Sensi. Questi incontri contribuirono alla sua maturazione e le offrirono l’opportunità di partecipare a progetti di scenografia e decorazione d’interni per residenze di grande prestigio. Furono anni intensi, non solo di formazione, studio e ricerca, ma anche di incessante lavoro nella pittura da cavalletto e nella decorazione d’interni.

Le sue opere sono state esposte in numerose mostre personali e collettive, sia in Italia che all’estero. Tra queste, si ricordano l'esposizione del 1997 nelle sale del Palazzo Comunale di Ascoli Piceno, quella del 2009 presso Officine Interni e, nel 2010, le mostre alla Casa Internazionale delle Donne di Roma e al “Premio Bancarella”.

Francesca Benigni è stata una pittrice figurativa dotata di una tecnica raffinata e di una profonda sensibilità artistica, sempre alla ricerca dell’essenza del vero, delle cose e della vita. La sua carriera artistica si è intrecciata con una sofferenza acuta e tormentata, segnata dalle difficoltà dell’esistenza e da un’instancabile ricerca pittorica volta a rappresentare sulla tela le vicende umane ed esistenziali nella loro essenza più autentica.

Il fulcro della sua ricerca pittorica è stato il ritratto e la figura umana. Nei suoi dipinti affrontò tematiche profonde, come la nascita, rappresentata nel bambino che viene al mondo tra sofferenza e lotta, e le diverse fasi della sua crescita. Un altro tema ricorrente era la maternità, in cui l’abbraccio materno diventa rifugio e conforto per affrontare le aspettative della vita e il mondo circostante.

Non fu una pittrice di paesaggi, ma attraverso una serie di opere che chiamava “ritratti di natura” riuscì a cogliere l’essenza della natura nel dettaglio: petali di magnolia o gigli sulla spiaggia, restituiti con una tale intensità da coinvolgere profondamente l’osservatore.

Si esprimeva attraverso diverse tecniche, principalmente olio e tempera, su tela o su tavola, trattando le superfici con antiche metodologie. Il suo processo pittorico era meticoloso: iniziava con una prima mano di colore steso molto diluito, per poi sovrapporre successivi strati, creando atmosfere vibranti e ricche di profondità.
Mi piace concludere questo post citando un suo pensiero:
“Se la pittura da cavalletto rappresenta la mia anima ombrosa e tragica, la pittura murale e la decorazione mi permettono di esprimere leggerezza, piacere dell’armonia, esigenza infantile di creare uno spazio felice e immaginario”.

Unexpectedly and prematurely, she passed away a few years ago, leaving her work unfinished and an inner void in those who had the pleasure of knowing and appreciating her. I am talking about Francesca Benigni, a Roman painter (Rome, 1957 – 2014). At a very young age, after obtaining her classical high school diploma, she moved to Paris in 1976 to refine and improve her innate artistic skills. There, she attended the École des Beaux-Arts in the Arts Plastiques section and took photography lessons at the Société Française de Photographie. Later, in 1979, she continued to deepen her knowledge of painting techniques by attending the École Supérieure de Peinture Van der Kelen in Brussels, one of the most important European decoration schools. In 1987, she attended engraving courses at the Internationale Sommerakademie für Bildende Kunst in Salzburg.

During her stay in Paris, she had one of those encounters that would change her life: she met Lidia de Nobili, a renowned painter and set designer who collaborated, among others, with L. Visconti, G. Menotti, and T. Richardson. This fruitful encounter profoundly enriched her artistic education, guiding her towards the study of the classics and traditional painting techniques.

But that meeting was not just an opportunity for personal growth; it also opened the doors of the theatrical world for her, leading her to collaborate with renowned directors such as A. Arias, G. Menotti, and J.M. Simon, as well as with the famous set designer F. Palamidese. At the same time, her work expanded into interior decoration, where she frescoed prestigious residences in collaboration with established architects like R. Mongiardino, E. Carcano, and T. Facella Sensi. These collaborations contributed to her artistic maturity and provided her with opportunities to participate in set design and interior decoration projects for highly prestigious residences. Those were intense years, filled not only with education, study, and research but also with relentless work in easel painting and interior decoration.

Her works have been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions both in Italy and abroad. Notable among them are the 1997 exhibition in the halls of the Palazzo Comunale in Ascoli Piceno, the 2009 exhibition at Officine Interni, and in 2010, exhibitions at the Casa Internazionale delle Donne in Rome and the "Premio Bancarella."

Francesca Benigni was a figurative painter endowed with a refined technique and deep artistic sensitivity, always seeking the essence of truth, things, and life. Her artistic career was intertwined with acute and tormented suffering, marked by life's difficulties and an unceasing pictorial pursuit aimed at representing human and existential experiences in their most authentic essence.

The core of her pictorial research was portraiture and the human figure. In her paintings, she explored profound themes such as birth, represented by the child coming into the world through suffering and struggle, and the different stages of growth. Another recurring theme was motherhood, where the maternal embrace becomes a refuge and a source of comfort in facing life's expectations and the surrounding world.

She was not a landscape painter, but through a series of works she called "portraits of nature," she managed to capture nature's essence in detail: magnolia petals or lilies on the beach, rendered with such intensity that they deeply engaged the observer.

She expressed herself through various techniques, mainly oil and tempera, on canvas or board, treating surfaces with ancient methodologies. Her painting process was meticulous: she started with a very diluted first layer of color, then gradually overlaid successive layers, creating vibrant and deeply rich atmospheres.
I would like to conclude this post by quoting one of her thoughts:
“If easel painting represents my shadowy and tragic soul, mural painting and decoration allow me to express lightness, the pleasure of harmony, the childlike need to create a happy and imaginary space.”
