"Poppies" - Experimental Oil Pastel Painting

in Discovery-it21 days ago (edited)

Today I have a quick floral painting for you. This was an experiment: whatever "oil paint" I used in this painting was actually made from oil pastel and linseed oil! That is, I cut pieces of pastel stick, drizzeled artist-quality linseed oil over them, smushed them with a palette knife on a glass plate, and mulled them until I had a smooth, pasty paint consistency.

I wanted to see whether this mixture would cure like regular oil paint - and it does! The advantage of "paintifying" some oil pastels lies in the perfect, seemless color match between pastel and paint.

This technique works accross all brands of oil pastels, from the coarse Pentels to the buttery Senneliers. Naturally, the drier the pastel stick (Pentel), the longer the mixture needs to be mulled over. This is another tool in my artistic tool box that will come in very handy in the future.

Thank you Delilha. So glad you like my little sketch.😀

A beautiful painting! I love Poppy flowers!

Thanks. Glad you like it. 😀

Wow, it's so beautiful!

Thank you 😀

Well done! It's a very original way of working 😉 We used to be very academic with our materials, but there are an infinite number of other things you can do with them.
It reminds me of the technique of using coffee to paint.

Thank you. I have to be a little academic 😀 because I want my stuff to be archival. In that sense, painting with coffee is a bad idea, because the coffee acid will destroy the paper over time. While experiments of any kind are a lot of fun, there are still limits, depending on what one wants to achieve.

P.S. The paper was gessoed, so no problem with the acid in the linseed oil.

I see, painting with coffee is more like a funny experiment, but it is really complex to expose or preserve, as you said.
In fact it is a challenge in the world of art, but also in life in general, especially human life, to want to fight against entropy, in other words to fight against the natural erosion of things. We want them to be eternal.
In that sense, it's really impressive to see old buildings standing up to everything and still being visible today.

Well, I don't have children, and I'm up in age. When I'm done enjoying my creations, I'll go to art shows, sell what I can (the good ones), and give away the rest. My last Hoorah.

In a hundred years, and about as many thrift stores, they'll be antiques, and somebody will say "Gee, that's pretty. Who was this Bill character?" And I'll be somewhere in my entropy nirwana, smiling.

Or they toss the art, 'cause they only liked the frame. Or something else entirely. As long as it's archival, my options are wide open. 🤣
