Return from Canberra via Marulan : July 18 2023

Woke to a foggy Canberra morning. The 17th was right in the fog. Plan for the day was to head down to Tuggeranong south of Canberra to meet up with our friend's son. We had coffee and a chat about his stuff. A tough story and it feels good to have been there to support him and his mum.

Left Canberra a little before midday. Photo from the car of Lake George - now full. It has not had this much water for as long as I have driven past it - 23 years

We stopped in Marulan for our lunch break at my favourite café. Been here a few times on cycling trips. Old Royal Hotel across the street

New shopping precinct across the street includes a new café. Did not see anyone go in and out. Our café was once the general store

At the back of this car park is a new IGA. General store has killed the café business. I have friends who live not far from here. This new general dealer saves them a 20 km trip further into Goulburn. The local café may be the loser but the community has to be better off.

Meridian Cafe has re-opened too. Another nail - no customers here either

Marulan post office - now a nik nak shop.

Was sure pleased my wife did the driving. I slept a fair bit. She did well.

Dinner: Pizza

Trade action: Bought INGA.AS, GGB. TO, PAAS. Adjusted YOU. Credit spreads BAC.

Towns are so neat and tidy, sad to see shopping malls spring up and kill off the Mom & Pop stores slowly but surely.

Lovely scenery around the lake.

This one is a bitter sweet situation. The centre is tiny. The grocer is an independent. The locals benefit hugely from having a local store. I know for my friends, it cuts their shopping journey from 30 kms one way to 10. The cafe lost their general dealer stuff but they have not stepped up the turn their cafe into a local delicacies destination. They just make hamburgers

Taking a step sideways into slightly different business, hope it is a huge success.

Small business owners suffer if they don't adopt a unique change, somewhere people look forward to visiting when doing the grocery run.

thank you very much for sharing the report and beautiful photos, have a nice day
