Golf at iconic New South Wales Golf Club, Sydney : February 8 2024

in Actifit4 months ago (edited)

Another cloudy and cooler day. Forecast is for rain to clear away from the coast and winds to ease off in the afternoon. Important as today is D-day for getting back to golfing. Spent the morning doing some investing stuff. Headed out to La Perouse on the north side of Botany Bay under said grey cloud

View back to the city

Photo of Botany Bay container port both taken from the golf club car park

View of the ocean over the fairways from the car park. Location shot - New South Wales Golf Club - one of Sydney's premier golf clubs and host to St Alban's Old Boys golf reunion. This was my school in South Africa that I finished 50 years ago.

The course is undulating - many of the fairways look nice and wide. Straight is important as the coastal scrub is dense. Many of the holes have blind drives. Our fourball was hosted by a school friend who is a member - he steered us around

Fabulous hole dropping down to the sea. Of course one cannot see that from the tee - follow the line Jonathan suggests and then play to what you can see

It took a while to get the driving to work but it did. The work closer to the hole was harder - not practised that and it is more feel than muscle memory. This hole is the iconic hole on the course - the 6th - with the tee over the water just to the left of frame. I have played the course once - cannot recall how I went. Will remember this one

Shane, the current St Albans headmaster, and I reached the green and both putted for birdie. We both got safe pars (3 shots). That was my target for the day - one par.

An insert: about that hole - rated the best par 3 in Australia by Golf Digest.

View from the top of the course across the entrance to Botany Bay. Down below is a memorial - this is where Captain Cook landed and where they collected water.

Did manage one more par. Found enough golf balls to replace the ones I lost. Did manage a few really good shots - lots of work to get scoring right.

Enjoyed a few drinks chatting about the people we have in common and catching up on the places they got to.

Sunset photo on the way out - a good day. The main reunion is tomorrow

Home late - cooked pizza for dinner.

Stayed away from markets - waiting for Cameco (CCJ) results before doing anything on uranium

Thanks. This golf course has to be one of the best views in the world. Pebble Beach, CA maybe too
