I have been to Fuerteventura many times over the past 20 years. One thing that I have wanted to do for a long time is to ride a mountain bike here. Today, I hired a bike and did exactly that!
As this was my first ride here, I was not completely prepared and forgot to bring some of my own things like riding shoes and helmet, which I had to hire at the bike centre. It's not a big problem, but it would be better to have own equipment. However, the mountain bike was great.
We took the volcano tour. A medium difficulty ride into the interior of the island. A gravel road passing some spectacular volcanic scenery.
Our destination was the famous Calderon Hondo. A complete volcanic cone. We reached the car park area where we had a choice. It was a lengthy walk up to the summit of about 2hrs round trip. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to climb today so we turned around and headed back.
There were some great views of the island from the higher ground. Lanzarote could be seen, another of the Canary Islands which was looking very clear in the current weather conditions.
After our descent from the hills, we took a ride along the coast where there were some nice views of the rocky shoreline.
Our ride today was a great introduction to mountain biking in the Canaries. Next time I will be better prepared. This kind of thing takes careful planning as there are many things that need to be considered before setting off into the unknown!

Looks like a great trip thanks for sharing I have never been to that part of the world. Is it expensive to hire an electric bike, I guess they want some sort of insurance just like cars. I wonder if my credit card or travel insurance would cover it.
We hired a total of four bikes for €108. Not bad at all. All they needed was a credit card number to cover any damages etc. I highly recommend it. Payment is by normal bank card or cash.
