This plant is looking a little sparse! I think it is a magnolia due to the lack of leaves, but I'm not certain about that. I can't be a rhododendron for the reasons just noted.
I dont think I have ever seen anything like it before. Normally these shrubs are short and bushey with many flower heads. The colour is also a lot darker than I have seen before. A real mystery to me.

What you have there is indeed a Magnolia tree. First, the pods come; then the blooms and the leaves are the last to emerge. They are beautiful in bloom. They can leave a bit of a mess once the flower petals wilt and fall off. Enjoy it’s splendor!
