A story of a diabetes patient with cellulitis and dry gangrene on his right foot with an amputated left leg

in Actifit2 years ago

Assalamu Alaikum. How are you? I am hoping that you are fine there. I am fine too, Alhamdulillah. Here are my activities on the 11th of September 2022. It was Sunday. It is my Actifit report number 819! In this post, I have included the following things:

  • My chamber updates
  • Physical activities
  • A story of a patient with diabetes complications
  • Islamic reminder (A Quranic verse/ A hadith /A dua/A Youtube lecture)
  • An invitation to join/try a few awesome programs/projects</center

Chamber updates

On Sunday, it was an average busy day at the office. I consulted 30 patients during my office work. One patient cancelled the registration because she could not wait in the queue. In the visa medical section, 37 people came for the check-up. I examined half of them.

Physical activity

There was no extra physical activity (walking/running/cycling) on Sunday. However, I just made 10k steps. I keep the actifit app open 24/7. Hence, it records all the steps I take every day (when I keep the phone in my pocket); from home to the office and mosque and vice versa. Also, I need to move in my clinic a lot, from my chamber to the visa medical section multiple times a day. All of these help me every day to make the steps. On Sunday, after finishing my office work, we went to the Lulu hypermarket. The walk inside the market also helped me in this regard.

A story of a diabetic patient with cellulitis and dry gangrene at his right foot with an amputated left leg

A few days ago one middle-aged Omani patient came to me. His right foot was in a bad shape. According to him, due to heat (!), there were some rashes initially on his right foot that later became infected. He was a long-standing diabetes patient. When we (another GP doctor and I) saw it, there was swelling of the right foot (cellulitis). There was obvious pus on the skin. His right great toe was black already which is a feature of loss of blood supply to the part of the body (dry gangrene). He was not having much pain in that foot. And, we also came to know that his right foot/leg was amputated a few years back in Dubai due to diabetes complications!

He already took some management from another clinic including an antibiotic. His situation necessitated multidisciplinary management to save his foot. So, we urged him to go to a higher multidisciplinary centre where a surgeon, diabetes specialist and vascular surgeon were available. We were able to convince him to go to such a hospital.
