Rusting of the rod (Reinforcement Bar/Steel Bar) has a very harmful effect on the concrete structure. The main damages are:
Damage to rusting of the rod
- The strength of the rod decreases: Rust is actually iron oxide formed by the combination of iron + oxygen + water.
In this, the original steel part of the rod gradually corrodes, resulting in the load-bearing capacity of the rod. - The diameter of the rod decreases: When the rod becomes thin due to rust, its effective cross-section decreases.
As a result, the tensile strength required for the structure is not obtained. - Concrete cracks: Rust actually occupies more volume than the original iron (about 6-8 times more).
This swollen part cracks the concrete under pressure. - Bond Strength decreases: Rust affects the grip (Bond Strength) between the rod and the concrete.
As a result, the original "Anchorage" of the rod with the concrete is destroyed. - The durability and sustainability of the structure decreases: If rust remains for a long time, the design life of the building decreases and there is a risk of sudden collapse.
