My Actifit Report Card: August 21 2022

in Actifit3 years ago

Alright, lots of writing today. I’ve hit 7775 words, according to my counter, which seems like a lucky amount to end the day on.

This morning was pretty brutal, I was under so much pressure to work on Dragons of the Western Shores that I forgot to eat breakfast and worked for four hours until I realized that I wasn’t hungry unusually early, I just hadn’t eaten at all.

But it’s somewhat done, and you can find it over on itch.io. There’s even a character sheet, which is far from pretty but should be functional enough to use for future playtesting and as an aid for players. Turns out not having your good layout stuff is a pretty big setback, but I have Microsoft Publisher and I’m not afraid to bumble around until I get it to meet my needs for relatively orderly layouts.

I realized that I had forgotten about another jam I joined, which is a challenge to make a game set in a library (or use a library as a theme, but what’s the fun in that?). I came up with the concept of a cyberpunk library a while back, but I never got around to actually making the game because Oasis Roads came along and I’m much more interested in that.

But I’ve remembered the challenge and decided to try my best to knock out a decent looking game without my usual tools. Powerpoint is the answer, since it does great small-page layout and I’m using Midjourney-derived images in a 2:3 aspect ratio to create a game for screen, plus a print-friendly standard letter format rulebook to use alongside it. I shudder every time I think of doing the character sheet, which is going to be pretty rough with my currently available tools. I’m not sure if I want to try it in Inkscape (looks potentially good, but I don’t like its grid/space management) or in Publisher like Dragons of the Western Shores.

Fortunately, the final deadline is 10 days out and I’ve got plenty of time to figure out the rough spots before I have to submit my game. I’m very happy with how the Powerpoint design setup is going.
