volunteered to help people in the earthquake-affected area

In this morning, I went to join my team's efforts to donate rice, eggs and cooking oil to two villages in the earthquake-affected area in Inle lake, which is about 25 miles from my home. As you know, a strong 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Sagaing region in Myanmar. Although my home town was not severely affected, the villages in Inle lake have suffered - many of the houses collapsed and people there need helps in terms of food, drinking water, shelter, etc.. So, members from our organization had made an assessment by enquiring the needs of the local villagers and bought rice, cooking oil and eggs and transported to donate them to two of the affected villages. And I volunteered to participate in the process. We went to Inle lake with our cars and then took motor boats to carry the donation materials to the villages.

I found that most of the houses in the two villages we had chosen to donate collapsed; only some newly built houses were left undamaged by the earthquake. I found that about around 80% of the houses were damaged. The houses were built in the water and I found that the poles broke apart in some cases and in some houses tilted to one side. I think all those affected houses need to be rebuilt. I found the villagers had started building new shelter houses to relocate those from the collapsed houses.

I found there were many instreams of people from nearby towns coming to donate the affected villages. After successfully transferred the donation materials, we went to see another village to enquire and assess their needs. It was said villagers need wood and bamboo for constructing or repairing their houses. We will go donate again the day after tomorrow with the materials they need.

If you have ever visited Myanmar, you will know the famous Inle lake and the lake dwellers called Inthars, who lives on long-legged houses. They make their living by fishery, growing vegetables on floating gardens and making handicrafts. Belows are some of the photos taken today.
