On the island of La Gomera is a small town called Hermigua that has a curious construction on its coast: the Hermigua davit.

A davit in a concrete and steel structure built in the early twentieth century on the island of La Gomera in order to load agricultural goods grown by farmers for export directly onto ships anchored off the coast.

The very abrupt orography of the island, together with the strong winds and waves, made it very difficult for ships to reach the coast, since there was no port in the area. That is why the davits were devised, formed by strong and robust columns submerged in the sea that held ramps and platforms to connect the cliffs with the ships.

With the passage of time and the construction of roads and ports in different parts of the island, the Hermigua davit was gradually abandoned. In addition, it suffered very important damages due to the inclemency of the weather and the erosion of the sea, so it lost its ramp and its platforms, leaving only its columns standing.

Today, its ruins have become a tourist attraction. Next to the mighty columns and the wild landscape, a pleasant natural swimming pool has been built to the delight of visitors.
