My Actifit Report Card: April 20 2024

in Actifit16 days ago

Back to hiking up into the hills on the Prescott National Forest with my little Lulu - 4 miles up the rocky Bannie Mine Rd to its namesake copper mine overlooking the valley below.

It was already almost 70 degrees this morning when we began our morning 2 miler. Lulu spotted a couple of cats soon after we turned off the busy sidewalk, so she was really moving along then. Of course, once the cats ran off, we were back to our usual leisurely stroll pace for the remainder.
Lynx Creek campground was loaded with people, some prospecting while others were just enjoying a weekend of primitive camping under the trees.

The old road up to the mine and the remote hills beyond is now a rocky tract popular with off-road adventurers (or hikers like us).
It was up, up and up pretty much for almost 2 miles before we reached the old mine area. All that remains are a few cement foundations and bits of old metal scattered among the piles of waste rocks.

Lots of birds to keep us company and even a few butterflies along the way with some dainty but pretty wildflowers nestled among the rocks.

We tried a different track back down the hills by heading along the rocky creek channel running down to Lynx Creek below. It was a very rugged way for us and there was no true trail to follow. In some spots the landscape was relatively wide and easy to navigate whole many other spots were narrow and rock-covered that made it slow going for me (Lulu didn't seem to have that much trouble).

Eventually we reached a spot were the creek dropped over a huge rock outcrop down about 20 or 30 feet below so it was a couple of hundred foot scramble up the hillside back onto the road to finish the return trip.

We werenothtired after that hike but it was a beautiful day to be out in nature and I'm hoping we'll be back there tomorrow for some prospecting.
