Metallica is an American heavy metal band formed in 1981 in Los Angeles, California. The band's original lineup consisted of vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield, drummer Lars Ulrich, guitarist Dave Mustaine, and bassist Ron McGovney. Mustaine was later replaced by Kirk Hammett in 1983.

He was replaced by Jason Newsted, and the band released their fifth studio album, "Justice for All," in 1988. This was followed by the self-titled "Metallica" (also known as the "Black Album") in 1991, which became the band's best-selling album and spawned several hit singles, including "Enter Sandman" and "Nothing Else Matters."
