Hello to everyone. Today, I will try to introduce you to an instrument found in Western Anatolia, Greece and the Balkans.
Herkese merhaba. Bugün sizlere Batı Anadolu, Yunanistan ve Balkan coğrafyasında rastlanan bir enstrümanı tanıtmaya çalışacağım.
This unknown instrument (Classical Kemenche), one of the oldest forms of the violin family, is produced by hand. Since the structure of the instrument resembles a pear, it has also been called by this name.
Keman ailesinin en eski formlarından ve az tanınan Klasik Kemençe, el işçiliği ile üretilmektedir. Enstrümanın yapısı armudu andırdığı için bu isimle anıldığı da olmuştur.
It was mainly used by Greek immigrants, preferred in Ottoman music, and sometimes Sufi music was performed with this instrument. Originally known as the Byzantine Lyre, this instrument was first described by the Iranian traveler Ibn Khurradadhbih.
Esas olarak Yunan göçmenler tarafından kullanılmış, Osmanlı müziğinde de tercih edilmiş kimi zaman tasavvuf müziği de bu enstrümanla icra edilmiştir. Esasen Bizans Lir’i olarak bilinen bu çalgı ilk kez İranlı seyyah Ibn Hurdâzbih tarafından tanımlanmıştır.

The instrument has also been used for popular music genres such as "Smyrna-Style" and "Rebetiko". The source of this music is Anatolia. Especially İzmir Bayraklı. Its old name is Smirni/ Σμύρνη.
Enstrüman, “Smyrna-Style” ve “Rebetiko” gibi popüler müzik türleri için de kullanılmıştır. Bu müziğin kaynağı ise Anadolu’dur. Özellikle İzmir Bayraklı’dır. Eski adı ise Smirni/ Σμύρνη’dir.
Variations of the instrument exist in various parts of the Mediterranean geography. Examples include the Bulgarian Gadulka, the Italian Calabrian Lira, the Croatian Adriatic Lijerica, and the Crete/Dodecanese Lyre.
Enstrümanın varyasyonları, Akdeniz coğrafyasının muhtelif yerinde mevcuttur. Örnekler arasında Bulgar Gadulkası, İtalya'daki Calabria Lirası, Hırvat Adriyatik Lijericası ve Girit/Oniki Adalar Liri, sayılabilir.
As you can see, although the instrument has a Western identity, it seems to have gained a different identity in the Ottoman geography and especially with Sufi music.

My brother has been trying to learn this instrument lately. Although we live in Turkey-Ankara, we go to Eskişehir (Old-town) periodically for education. This city is a city that carries the atmosphere of Ottoman culture.
