In recent years, rock has undergone a metamorphosis in which it has ceased to be the rough and manly genre it used to be in the past. Rock ended up becoming a monstrous hybrid between many aspects and other genres that have created different subgenres, until it became an amalgam that can only be called "experimental". Rock has taken so much of these genres that already experimented with their roots, to create a kind of "wave" of bands that make use of these genres to create their own styles and take rock to a new dimension, revisited, but transformed. There are some pretty remarkable bands in this wave, but today I want to talk to you about one that is just making its debut. This May, we had the pleasure of having their debut album released: Bright Green Field. Today, we will talk about Squid and their new album.

Sobre la banda | About the band

Squid is a fairly recent British band, they appeared way back in 2016 releasing a single, as any band would begin. But the world wouldn't really know about them until 2019, in which they would release an EP that would start to resonate and be much talked about in the music communities, the EP is titled "Town Centre" and features a sound that can be categorized as Art Punk. Some personalities in the music world, especially critics and youtubers, also in music forums and communities, started to talk a lot about Squid that year. In 2020, they signed with the record label Warp Records, a legendary label that has to its credit several of the most important and interesting artists of electronic and experimental music of the last decades.

On May 7th of this year, their debut album "Bright Green Field" would be released. After three EPs full of noise and distortion, Bright Green Field turned out to be a slightly different album by comparison. Squid would be presented to the world as a group that would belong to this wave of experimental rock that I mentioned at the beginning of the post, so much so that the album was produced by Dan Carey, a producer who was part of projects of other bands belonging to this wave.

Sobre el álbum | About the album

We already know that this album was released in May, we already know that it belongs to the current experimental rock wave and we already know that it was released by Warp Records. But where does this album fit in this "wave" of experimental rock? In these months in which we have seen albums like "For The First Time" by Black Country, New Road or the recent "Cavalcade" by black midi. These three albums all belong to the same wave but they are all extremely different, For the first time is experimental rock in the vein of post-rock, Cavalcade is in the vein of avant-prog and jazz, and Bright Green Field revives post-punk and funk in rock but bringing it in a demented way reminiscent of no wave.

But what does all this technical chatter mean? It means that Ollie Judge, the vocalist and leader of the band, is going to be screaming and singing at the top of his lungs with rhythmically charged speeds, it means that the instruments are going to be in a bizarre cross between noisy and danceable, that the guitars are going to sound the way they want to sound, rebellious against academicism, causing a dissonance that will get into your veins in the same way that in the 80s, in some underground clubs, the social outcasts danced kicking to the rhythm of dance-punk.

However, Bright Green Field is nothing revolutionary. The band has already mentioned that it has influences from bands like NEU! and This Heat. Which makes it clear that there is a clear krautrock influence and that is visible through the way several of the songs on this album are composed, especially the longer ones. But personally, I see much more of the post-punk scene than these genres. There is a huge influence from the dance-punk world, you could say that this record drinks a lot from James Chance, but the band that I couldn't get out of my head while listening to this record, was Talking Heads and I'm sure that's something that would raise more than one eyebrow. But if there is one post-punk band that has been known for making rock as funky as possible, that band was Talking Heads, and even though Squid tries to do it with a much more dissonant and arrhythmic sound, I feel that there is a lot of that band's spirit present on this album.

And my experience? Well, although I've been saying only positive things about this album for a while, there is something I hinted before and I want to repeat it, this album has nothing revolutionary or otherworldly about it. It is a rendition and homage to those more insane post-punk movements of the 80s. Although there are many people who say that Bright Green Field is a masterpiece, I personally think that it doesn't go much beyond a solid and promising debut. Already Squid proved in the past that they serve perfectly as a loud and distorted band, with this album, they prove that they can give much more depth and concept to their music and also that they are able to bring a much more danceable and moving sound. Wherever this band's influence reaches, Bright Green Field is definitely an amazing debut for them and leaves me wanting to hear more and more from them. For that and more, Bright Green Field gets a...
