Hey, qué tal todo por acá? Cómo les va, Hivers? Acá me encuentro yo una vez más con una reseña de uno de los últimos estrenos que más captó mi atención estas últimas semanas. El regreso de un rapero que desde hace algunos años está en boca de todos y convirtiéndose cada vez más en un ícono y leyenda del hip hop actual. Tras un álbum increíble en el 2019, este año fue estrenado un nuevo álbum que traería de regreso algunas fórmulas que hacía mucho no se veían en su carrera. El regreso de Tyler, The Creator, vino con todo.
Hey, how's it going over here? How's it going, Hivers? Here I am once again with a review of one of the latest releases that caught my attention these last few weeks. The return of a rapper who for some years now has been on everyone's lips and becoming more and more an icon and legend of today's hip hop. After an incredible album in 2019, this year was released a new album that would bring back some formulas that had not been seen for a long time in his career. The return of Tyler, The Creator, came with everything.
¿Quién es Tyler, The Creator? | Who is Tyler, The Creator?
Uno de los personajes más interesantes del hip hop actual, Tyler Gregory Okonma, popularmente reconocido por su nombre de rapero: "Tyler, The Creator" (¿el creador de qué? nunca lo sabremos). Nació en Estados Unidos, específicamente en Los Ángeles y desde inicios de su carrera ha sido todo un personaje y ha captado la atención de la crítica y la audiencia en general. A veces por buenas razones y a veces por malas razones. A inicios de su carrera, Tyler era un rapero con un estilo muy agresivo, sus letras estaban cargadas de crítica y odio, con un humor muy oscuro e insultos directos a superestrellas o frases grotescas. Originalmente, se hizo popular por su canción "Yonkers", en la cual habla sobre fantasear con cortarle la garganta a Bruno Mars entre otras frases controversiales. La canción tiene un beat y estilos muy oscuros y ominosos, el vídeo también contiene imágenes algo siniestras de Tyler con una cucaracha, vomitando o colgándose con una soga.
One of the most interesting characters in hip hop today, Tyler Gregory Okonma, popularly known by his rapper name: "Tyler, The Creator" (the creator of what? We'll never know). He was born in the United States, specifically in Los Angeles, and since the beginning of his career he has been quite a character and has captured the attention of critics and audiences in general. Sometimes for good reasons and sometimes for bad reasons. Early in his career, Tyler was a rapper with a very aggressive style, his lyrics were loaded with criticism and hate, with a very dark humor and direct insults to superstars or grotesque phrases. Originally, he became popular for his song "Yonkers", in which he talks about fantasizing about cutting Bruno Mars' throat among other controversial phrases. The song has a very dark and ominous beat and styles, the video also contains somewhat sinister images of Tyler with a cockroach, vomiting or hanging himself with a rope.
Posterior a esta etapa tan controversial en su carrera, Tyler comenzó a tomar un camino un poco más humorístico y ligero en su estilo. Con el tiempo, logró "limpiar" un poco su reputación y formar parte de un colectivo de música que lo lanzó aún más al estrellato y a darle una mejor recepción en la crítica. Tyler estaría durante un rato en boca de muchos, pero no sería hasta el lanzamiento de cierto disco que realmente su fama explotaría, este disco siendo "Flower Boy", un álbum de enorme éxito en el que varias de sus canciones comenzaron a volverse sumamente virales y a formar todo un culto alrededor de su música. Con este disco, Tyler se consagró como uno de los grandes raperos de estos tiempos y con su último disco: "Call Me If You Get Lost", nos lo dejó claro una vez más.
After this controversial stage in his career, Tyler began to take a more humorous and light-hearted approach to his style. Eventually, he managed to "clean up" his reputation a bit and become part of a music collective that launched him even further to stardom and a better critical reception. Tyler would be on the lips of many for a while, but it wouldn't be until the release of a certain album that his fame would really explode, this album being "Flower Boy", a hugely successful album in which several of his songs began to go extremely viral and form a cult around his music. With this album, Tyler established himself as one of the great rappers of these times and with his last album: "Call Me If You Get Lost", he made it clear once again.
CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST
Tras el estreno del quinto álbum de Tyler, él mismo dejó los estándares muy altos para su audiencia. Personalmente, no fui fanático de ese disco y al sol de hoy sigue sin gustarme demasiado, pero los fans estaban esperando el regreso de Tyler y evidentemente, estaban esperando algo que estuviese a la altura de "IGOR", el quitnto disco de Tyler. Así, este 25 de Junio de este año, fue estrenado "CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST", lanzado mediante la prestigiosa Columbia Records y es un regreso a sonidos previos a IGOR.
After the release of Tyler's fifth album, Tyler himself set the bar very high for his audience. Personally, I wasn't a fan of that album and to this day I still don't like it much, but fans were waiting for Tyler's return and evidently, they were waiting for something that would live up to "IGOR", Tyler's fifth album. So, on June 25th of this year, "CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST" was released, released through the prestigious Columbia Records and is a return to the sounds of pre-IGOR.
IGOR en 2019 estableció un estilo que hizo a Tyler bastante más conocido. Aunque realmente el boom de este rapero fue con el álbum previo a este, Flower Boy, en IGOR se consagró del todo. IGOR maneja géneros mucho más relacionados al Neo-Soul y al R&B alternativo, por lo que este álbum fue un cambio de sonido para Tyler. Si bien él ya veía experimentando con estos géneros, su presencia era más bien poca y sus canciones se centraban en el hip hop, que comúnmente solía ser agresivo. En el caso de CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST, el álbum decide intentar crear un balance entre ambos sonidos. Tyler tiene en este álbum algunas de sus mejores canciones de neo soul, que personalmente prefiero por encima de las de IGOR, ya que este disco no fue muy de mi agrado. También, en este disco Tyler regresa a el estilo de hip hop más agresivo y despectivo que hace muchos años dejó de hacer, esta vez con letras no tan controversiales. Por lo que este disco representa el punto medio entre todos sus estilos y es un álbum perfecto para visualizar varias de las facetas de Tyler.
IGOR in 2019 established a style that made Tyler quite a bit better known. Although really the boom of this rapper was with the album prior to this one, Flower Boy, in IGOR he was consecrated at all. IGOR handles genres much more related to neo-soul and alternative R&B, so this album was a change of sound for Tyler. Although he was already experimenting with these genres, his presence was rather scarce and his songs focused on hip hop, which was usually aggressive. In the case of CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST, the album decides to try to create a balance between both sounds. Tyler has on this album some of his best neo soul songs, which I personally prefer over IGOR, as this album was not much to my liking. Also, on this album Tyler returns to the more aggressive and derogatory hip hop style that he stopped doing many years ago, this time with not so controversial lyrics. So this album represents the middle ground between all of his styles and is a perfect album to visualize many of Tyler's facets.
Cabe destacar que Tyler a pesar de su faceta agresiva, también ha sido siempre un poco payaso, no solo en su música si no en su personaje artístico en general. Este álbum está plagado de videoclips donde esta faceta comédica deja entreverse, igualmente en el disco, hay algunos guiños a esto, aunque generalmente, la música está dominada por hip hop y neo soul, el disco a veces es agresivo y pisa con fuerza, en otras ocasiones es mucho más casual y relajado y también, puede llegar a ser hasta romántico y sensual.
It is worth noting that Tyler, despite his aggressive side, has always been a bit of a clown, not only in his music but in his artistic persona in general. This album is plagued with video clips where this comedic facet is glimpsed, also in the album, there are some nods to this, although generally, the music is dominated by hip hop and neo soul, the album is sometimes aggressive and stomping, at other times it is much more casual and relaxed and also, it can become even romantic and sensual.
Otra cosa bastante interesante de este álbum es el número de colaboraciones. Tyler siempre ha sido alguien a quien no le faltan compañeros en la música. Desde sus inicios formó parte del colectivo Odd Future y en el futuro siguió colaborando con muchas figuras del hip hop actual. Ha establecido amistad con varios artistas que han colaborado recurrentemente con él, una de las más célebres es Kali Uchis, quien ha estado presente en diversos proyectos de este artista. En este caso, este álbum posee colaboraciones de varios raperos actuales y algunos que ya tienen una enorme trayectoria, como es el caso de Lil Wayne.
Another interesting thing about this album is the number of collaborations. Tyler has always been someone who has no shortage of partners in music. From his early days he was part of the Odd Future collective and in the future continued to collaborate with many current hip hop figures. He has established friendships with several artists who have recurrently collaborated with him, one of the most famous is Kali Uchis, who has been present in various projects of this artist. In this case, this album has collaborations with several current rappers and some who already have a huge trajectory, as is the case of Lil Wayne.
Call Me If You Get Lost, probablemente no sea la obra maestra de Tyler, pero es probablemente su punto álgido en cuestiones de madurez artística. Se nota a leguas que Tyler ha encontrado su lugar y ha encontrado su verdadero estilo como artista, como rapero, como cantante e incluso como personaje. Sus letras están tan poderosas como siempre y su performance increíble y lleno de personalidad. Uno de los mejores álbumes de hip hop de la actualidad y, por supuesto, uno de los mejores álbumes de este año.
Call Me If You Get Lost is probably not Tyler's masterpiece, but it is probably his high point in terms of artistic maturity. You can tell that Tyler has found his place and has found his true style as an artist, as a rapper, as a singer and even as a character. His lyrics are as powerful as ever and his performance incredible and full of personality. One of the best hip hop albums of today and certainly one of the best albums of this year.
