Al iniciar el año, los fanáticos de la música como yo, nos preguntamos qué tendrán en el horno nuestros artistas favoritos y las voces más fuertes que conozcamos en las escenas de los géneros que escuchemos. De ahí, nacen muchos éxitos y también decepciones, pero algo singular, algo único, es cuando un artista completamente nuevo, debuta con mucha más fuerza que tus artistas favoritos. Es una sorpresa sumamente gratificante. Y aunque aún estamos a inicios del año, hace poco escuché el que para mí es uno de los mejores discos de neo-soul, no solo de este año, si no de los años recientes.
At the beginning of the year, music fans wonder what our favorite artists and the strongest voices we know in the scenes of the genres we listen to have in the oven. From that, we get many successes and disappointments, but something singular, something unique, is when a completely new artist debuts much stronger than your favorite artists. It is an extremely gratifying surprise. And although we are still at the beginning of the year, I recently listened to what for me is one of the best neo-soul albums, not only of this year, but of recent years.

Este interesante personaje es Kofi Owusu-Ansah, conocido por su nombre artístico, Genesis Owusu. Owusu es un artista nacido en Ghana y criado en Canberra, Australia. Este disco fue labrando su camino y creando bastante anticipación tras el lanzamiento del single "Don't Need You", el cual causó suficiente revuelo para que la crítica y la audiencia le diera la atención y la expectativa. Tras más de diez meses de espera, el disco por fin llegó a nosotros. 54 poderosos minutos cargados de ritmo y personalidad, Owusu se presenta a sí mismo como un personaje sumamente multifacético y original y ya desde el vamos, nos muestra su capacidad en grandes magnitudes.
Released on March 5th, this album came to completely shake the Neo-Soul grounds. A completely new voice on the scene brings this album, which could be called "conceptual" even though it doesn't really have a solid concept, but its themes and lyrics revolve around specific topics. This album was carving its path and creating quite a bit of anticipation after the release of the single "Don't Need You", which caused enough of a stir for critics and audiences to give it the attention and anticipation. After more than ten months of waiting, the album has finally arrived. 54 powerful minutes full of rhythm and personality, Owusu presents himself as an extremely multifaceted and original character and right from the start, he shows us his capacity in great magnitudes.
Aunque el disco caiga principalmente dentro de la categoría del Neo-Soul, la verdad es que Owusu demuestra tener un estilo sumamente versátil, ya que en este disco de 15 canciones podemos escucharlo dando interpretaciones increíbles en canciones de Pop Rock, Hip Hop abstracto, R&B alternativo, funk e incluso Post-Punk y Synth Punk, algo que yo jamás había escuchado en un artista de esta escena. De resto, Owusu demuestra su talento no solo como rapero, si no como cantante, de hecho, en la mayor parte del disco su performance es cantado, su voz es suave y suele cantar en falsete, al menos en sus canciones más centradas en el Neo-Soul, como lo son la canción homónima del disco o la sensual Waitin' On Ya, pero su versatilidad vocal tiene más que ofrecer.
Although the album falls mainly into the Neo-Soul category, the truth is that Owusu demonstrates an extremely versatile style, since in this 15 song album we can hear him giving incredible interpretations of Pop Rock, abstract Hip Hop, alternative R&B, funk and even Post-Punk and Synth Punk songs, something I had never heard in an artist of this scene. Otherwise, Owusu shows his talent not only as a rapper, but also as a singer, in fact, in most of the album his performance is sung, his voice is soft and he usually sings in falsetto, at least in his more Neo-Soul focused songs, like the homonymous song of the album or the sensual Waitin' On Ya, but his vocal versatility has more to offer.
Este disco también posee una carga lírica sumamente pesada al contener letras que exploran diversos temas enfoques centrados en el racismo y el sufrimiento diario de las personas de color. Desde cosas como actuales como la brutalidad policial, hasta la esclavitud. Desde tonos agresivos y protestantes hasta tonos melancólicos y pesimistas. Especialmente, el disco tiene una temática central más allá de lo plenamente racial, esta temática es específicamente la depresión y problemas emocionales que derivan de los problemas generales que vienen en la vida de las personas de color. Hay constantes metáforas presentes en las letras personificando el concepto de la depresión, notablemente la imagen del "Black Dog", una imagen recurrente en este disco.
This album also has an extremely heavy lyrical content with lyrics that explore various themes focusing on racism and the daily suffering of people of color. From things as topical as police brutality, to slavery. From aggressive and protesting tones to melancholic and pessimistic tones. Especially, the album has a central theme beyond what's purely racial, this theme is specifically depression and emotional problems that stem from the general problems that come in the lives of people of color. There are constant metaphors present in the lyrics personifying the concept of depression, notably the image of the "Black Dog", a recurring image on this album.
La ira y melancolía en este disco están presentadas de forma sumamente sólida cada vez que estas son necesarias. Esto es algo que se hace evidente siguiendo los cambios de ritmo y ambiente que pueden apreciarse entre canción y canción, no solo en producción, si no at través del versátil desempeño vocal de Owusu. De momentos, el disco cambia de una canción lenta de r&b a directamente synth punk con rapeo agresivo y grave, para luego irse por híbridos de estas dos formas, regresar al r&b esta vez combinándolo con el hip hop y muchas otras formas que pueden verse en este disco. Lo cual lo hace fácilmente un disco de mucha ambición, con semejante carga lírica, vocal y de producción. Es increíble ver como un artista totalmente nuevo llega a este punto de calidad desde un momento tan temprano en su carrera, no solo su innegable talento como cantante y rapero, si no su increíble capacidad para crear canciones con melodías y ritmos magnéticos que van a infectar tu mente y no podrás hacer nada al respecto más que bailar al ritmo de ellas.
The anger and melancholy on this album are presented in a very solid way whenever they are needed. This is something that becomes evident following the changes in tempo and mood that can be appreciated between songs, not only in production, but also through Owusu's versatile vocal performance. At times, the album shifts from a slow r&b song to straight up synth punk with aggressive and serious rapping, to then go for hybrids of these two forms, back to r&b this time combining it with hip hop and many other forms that can be seen on this album. Which easily makes it a very ambitious album, with such a lyrical, vocal and production load. It's amazing to see a brand new artist reach this point of quality so early in his career, not only his undeniable talent as a singer and rapper, but his incredible ability to create songs with magnetic melodies and rhythms that will infect your mind and you won't be able to do anything about it but dance to them.
Desde mi experiencia, entré a este disco sin ninguna clase de expectativas al no tener idea de la existencia de este artista. Incluso llegué a tener un mal presentimiento apenas comenzando el disco al ver que contenía una colaboración con Kirin J Callinan, un artista con el que he tenido experiencias bastante mezcladas en el pasado. From my experience, I went into this album without any kind of expectations having no idea of this artist's existence. I even got a bad feeling just starting the album when I saw that it contained a collaboration with Kirin J Callinan, an artist with whom I have had some pretty mixed experiences in the past.
