In 1964 Donald Byrd released A New Perspective, his best work in the hard bop style, in which he incorporates a gospel choir. His interest in the Civil Rights Movement and Miles Davis’ efforts to appeal to younger audiences led him to use funk rhythms and electric piano. In 1970 he released his first jazz-funk works: Fancy Free, which includes electric piano and guitar, and Electric Byrd, inspired by Davis’ essential Bitches Brew (1970). In 1973 he recorded Black Bird, his most important album of the rest of his career, a mix of jazz, rhythm and blues and funk that although rejected by much of the jazz critics, was one of the best sellers on the Blue Note label.

Byrd then helped his more gifted Howard University students form their own group, Blackbirds, which released five albums and which songs “Happy Music”, “Walking in Rhythm” and “Rock Creek Park” entered rhythm and blues and pop charts. On his part, he released several more jazz-funk works with Blue Note until he switched to Elektra Records in 1978, with which he recorded four albums in the same style until 1982. Afterwards he stopped playing due to health problems, but continued teaching. The theme starts right away at very fast tempo. The first to perform his solo is Byrd, which plays at a chilling speed, but without wandering for a single moment.
