La segunda pista del álbum In Rainbows de Radiohead no es solo una pieza de rock exquisita de la banda por su ininterrumpido ritmo y progresividad. En esta reseña quiero ofrecerles una lectura más contemporanizada de la letra de la canción, la cual puede imponerse como un texto polémico frente a la reacción conservadora actual —independientemente de que el grupo no tuvo intenciones políticas con ella y el álbum.
The second track of Radiohead's album In Rainbows is not only an exquisite piece of rock by the band for its uninterrupted rhythm and progressiveness. In this review I want to offer you a more contemporary reading of the lyrics of the song, which can be imposed as a controversial text in the face of the current conservative reaction —regardless of the fact that the group had no political intentions with it and the album.
Sobre Bodysnatchers vale comenzar hablando de sus inspiraciones. Thom Yorke ha reconocido la influencia fundamental de dos obras: la novela "Las poseídas de Stepherd" (1972) y el clásico del cine "La invasión de los ladrones de cuerpos" (1956). En el caso de la primera, se trata de una crítica feminista a la norma patriarcal que le impone a las mujeres determinados comportamientos y niega su subjetividad. La segunda es otra referencia a una invasión alienígena, en el contexto de la Guerra Fría, donde los extraterrestres hurtan y manipulan los cuerpos de sus víctimas. Entre ambas es fácil hallar una síntesis que se corresponde con la letra de la canción, una especie de quejido por la asfixia de las normas machistas que nos encierran. Pero Bodysnatchers nos puede decir más.
About Bodysnatchers it is worth starting by talking about their inspirations. Thom Yorke has recognized the fundamental influence of two works: the novel "The Possessed of Stepherd" (1972) and the film classic "The Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (1956). In the case of the first, it is a feminist critique of the patriarchal norm that imposes certain behaviors on women and denies their subjectivity. The second is another reference to an alien invasion, in the context of the Cold War, where aliens steal and manipulate the bodies of their victims. Between the two it is easy to find a synthesis that corresponds to the lyrics of the song, a kind of complaint about the suffocation of the macho norms that enclose us. But Bodysnatchers can tell us more.
Lo cierto es que Radiohead siempre ha sido un pulso de los problemas de las generaciones contemporáneas. No podemos leer sus canciones sin asociarlas a los fenómenos actuales, como la tecnología, la guerra, el consumismo, que nos afectan cotidianamente, y han estado presente en varios de sus álbumes. En tal sentido, aunque Bodysnatchers no fue declarada una canción política, en efecto lo es, y es posible arroparla de otras lecturas con el tiempo. Mientras que las primeras interpretaciones estaban asociadas a los roles de género, hoy podemos decir que se identifica también con el género en sí: la canción adquiere significados dentro de corrientes como el posgenerismo, la teoría queer y el transfeminismo.
The truth is that Radiohead has always been a pulse of the problems of contemporary generations. We cannot read their songs without associating them with current phenomena, such as technology, war, consumerism, which affect us on a daily basis, and have been present on several of their albums. In this sense, although Bodysnatchers was not declared a political song, it is indeed, and it is possible to wrap it up in other readings over time. While the first interpretations were associated with gender roles, today we can say that it is also identified with the genre itself: the song acquires meanings within currents such as postgenerism, queer theory and transfeminism.
El cuerpo, entendido aquí como un terreno político, funciona como un dispositivo de dominación basado en un dualismo tradicional (hombre-mujer) que resulta opresivo y es una mentira. Los "ladrones de cuerpos" resultan ser, finalmente, la sociedad política y conservadora que construye y refuerza este estereotipo para controlar al resto de la sociedad, aún en el siglo XXI. Bodysnatchers, 15 años después, se acerca sola a una problemática que se está discutiendo profundamente en varios países: la existencia de personas trans y no binarias, y su disidencia contra el esencialismo de la sociedad heteronormada. Aunque la banda no se lo propusiera, crearon aquí una canción atrevida y crítica, desde las emociones que siempre nos despierta su música.
The body, understood here as a political terrain, functions as a device of domination based on a traditional dualism (man-woman) that is oppressive and is a lie. The "body snatchers" turn out to be, finally, the political and conservative society that builds and reinforces this stereotype to control the rest of society, even in the XXI century. Bodysnatchers, 15 years later, is alone approaching a problem that is being deeply discussed in several countries: the existence of trans and non-binary people, and their dissent against the essentialism of the heteronformed society. Although the band did not propose it, they created a daring and critical song here, from the emotions that their music always awakens in us.

Radiohead siempre ha sido un grupo bastante polémico, incluso Thom Yorke puede considerarse un tipo muy avanzado, a su manera de pensar, con respecto al tiempo, ya que puso en tela de juicio muchos aspectos que nisiquiera estaban en discusión en aquel tiempo, y que ahora es el día a día en RRSS.
Sin dudas, y los álbumes de Radiohead confirman. No han sido solo una expresión contemporánea, sino una provocación al futuro. Por eso los admiro tanto.
