Three Tune Tuesday: 3 metal acts from 2023

in Music3 months ago

Hi Invisibles of the night.

Let's bring some metal into this Three Tune Tuesday! (format brought to us by @ablaze) On this episode of #TTT I bring you three metal albums from last year that made it onto my listening list. Ready? Go!

The Fear of Fear - Spiritbox

Spiritbox have been around for a few years now but it is in 2023 that they exploded among the metal community. Thanks to the incredible voice of singer Courtney LaPlante, who juggles perfectly between a huge growl and clean lyrics with a pop and melodic flavor, and the progressive metalcore riffs of guitarist Mike Stringer. The vanguard of the new metal generation destined to gain the big stages. They have more than 2 million monthly listeners on Spotify! Super congratulations to them. And I love this album and their videoclips which are spectacular.

Violent Communication - Shadow Cliq

Annieshred on guitar and Dannie Dodge on synth, MIDI guitar and production, they are Shadow Cliq, an eclectic new act in the future of metal. The kawaii-girl voice of Annie clashes with the cyberpunk basslines and the aggressive playing of both guitars and synths, with sounds inspired by the dubstep genre. Slap some metalcore guitar riffs in there and you find yourself thrown into the suburbs of Night City, year 2077. If you didn't know about the existence of future metal, here it is. If you don't like it, you're not an edgerunner.

Dislike to False Metal - Nanowar of Steel

In Italy, Nanowar of Steel are an institution. They've been making crazy comedy metal since the early 2000s and in their twenty-year career they've improved like the best Italian wine. Dislike to False Metal is perfect for pissing off the boomers and gatekeepers of the genre, starting with the most successful single, Disco Metal, which in fact sounds more 90s Eurodance than metal 🤣 If you can get all the quotes in this song, you're great.
What I love about Nanowar is their skill in maintaining a classic sound but then bringing it to the service of the topic at hand (often something very stupid and hilarious). Lately they have also managed to play at festivals outside Italy, so if you happen to, go and see them. Fun guaranteed!

Sort:

The world needs more disco metal! That's a nice varied selection.

I do not keep up with a lot of new music, but one from last year I bought was News from the invisible world by The Fierce and the Dead. I've also recently bought music from Hivers like @thetroublenotes and @ugochill, but that may not have been from 2023. I buy some tracks in @risingstargame too, including one of yours.

I don't find it correct to call it “metal,” but probably (unfortunately) this is a sign of the times.
None of these 3 bands do metal. They are rock mixtures of various genres, and guitars are not enough to call a song “metal.”
Metal music is about storytelling, specific sounds, and atmospheres.
I need only juxtapose Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Scorpions... with these examples of “hybrid music” to hear the difference.
Some might argue that metal is not “heavy metal,” but without “heavy,” metal (as in these examples) remains just confined to a derivation with cyber, groove, industrial, crossover (whatever) influences (even though the original crossover originated as a connection between thrash metal and punk)...(which is not hardcore).

The first band, Spiritbox is not bad, it's light music but, in my opinion it works. But if I have to choose the growl.... I prefer Angela Gossow's back in the day with Arch Enemy.

Shadow Cliq, it's not metal music. They might as well show up at San Remo.

Nanowar of Steel, I wouldn't even consider them. Every piece they do is a mix of genres. Between power metal and medieval folk... In the end they are more parody than anything else.

(Just my opinion, listening to “metal” for 38 years)

Some amazing selections here! Great to see / hear these new bands for me!:)

And I'm willing to dig more into modern day metal. It's not easy because everything is decided by the algorithms that always promote the same stuff 😒
