La primera vez que escuché Summertime fue en Berlin el año 1970 cuando fuimos en familia a ver Porgy and Bess. Esa película me impactó, me encantó y Summertime me enamoró. La película se estrenó el año 1959 y fue protagonizada por Sidney Poitier, Dorothy Dandridge & Sammy Davis Jr.
Porgy and Bess fue compuesta por George Gershwin (Música) e Ira Gershwin y DuBose Heyward (Texto-guión) y es en realidad una ópera en 3 actos que fue estrenada el 1935 y donde el propio Gershwin tocó el piano y dirigió la orquesta, y Abbie Mitchel interpretó el papel de Clara, siendo ella la primera en grabar el famoso tema.
Después de su estreno la ópera no se presentó en EEUU durante varios años, sin embargo durante los años 50 se hizo muy popular en Europa, principalmente en Milano, Londres y Leningrado.
En el año 1956 Summertime fue grabada por Mahaila Jackson quien fuera una de las cantantes de gostpel más importante e influyente del mundo. Luego con el lanzamiento del disco de Jazz de Ella Fitzgerald y Louis Armstrong, donde interpretaron Summertime, la canción empezó a agarrar vuelo y en el 1958 Miles Davis lanzó su versión instrumental.
Hoy en día la canción forma parte del Great American Songbook, se ha convertido en una de las canciones que más fue versionada en el siglo XX y se calcula que hay unas 38.000 versiones registradas en todos los estilos y géneros.

The first time I heard Summertime was in Berlin in 1970 when we went as a family to see Porgy and Bess. That movie impacted me, I loved it and I fell in love with Summertime. The movie was released in 1959 and starred Sidney Poitier, Dorothy Dandridge & Sammy Davis Jr.
Porgy and Bess was composed by George Gershwin (Music) and Ira Gershwin and DuBose Heyward (Text-script) and is actually an opera in 3 acts that was premiered in 1935 and where Gershwin himself played the piano and conducted the orchestra, and Abbie Mitchel played the role of Clara, being her the first to record the famous theme.
After its premiere the opera was not performed in the USA for several years, however during the 50's it became very popular in Europe, mainly in Milan, London and Leningrad.

Then with the release of the Jazz album by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, where they performed Summertime, the song began to take off and in 1958 Miles Davis released its instrumental version.
Today the song is part of the Great American Songbook, it has become one of the most covered songs of the 20th century, and there are an estimated 38,000 recorded versions in all styles and genres.

Siempre he sido amante de escuchar distintas versiones de una canción, ahí se puede apreciar lo maravillosa que es la música, cómo trasciende, hasta dónde puede llegar, no solo en el tiempo, en las distancias, sino en el alma de quienes lo interpretan y le dan vida de acuerdo a sus propias, vivencias, entorno, sentimientos, vida.
Qué diría Gershwin de cada una de las maravillosas interpretaciones de su canción? Jamás imaginó hasta dónde llegaría.

I have always been fond of listening to different versions of a song, there you can appreciate how wonderful music is, how it transcends, how far it can go, not only in time, in distances, but in the soul of those who interpret it and give it life according to their own experiences, environment, feelings, life.
What would Gershwin say about each of the wonderful interpretations of his song? He never imagined how far he would go.
