Good afternoon friends, I hope you are very well, here who greets you and has the pleasure of writing José Andrés Reyes, and today I want to touch on a point that is of considerable interest and deal with VERSATILITY as musicians.

I consider that versatility encompasses an endless number of concepts or situations where we realize that "Yes, you have to be versatile" and the concept is summarized as having the ability to adapt to any situation, if we take it in the field. musical, because we must learn to adapt to many things.

Especially if we intend or are training as a session musician, it is important to be able to master and study how to play each musical style, in the case of bassists, how would be the reaction of the bass with the percussion in the different genres and with the different touches percussion that we can get in that genre, I put a simple example:

In the world of vallenato, there are different grooves or rhythmic patterns, where not only the percussion changes but also the performance of the bass player, and it is important to know how the percussion sounds, how the bass or any other instrument is played in that change, as shown. call the rhythm and if possible where it is born.

I speak of vallenato because I consider it to be one of the Latin genres that has more rhythmic variants, among those we get and to name a few, (La puya, la parranda, el paseo)

As in the merengue we can get, (Alomaco, majao, right, caballito, apambichiao)

Now, the versatility of the musician will not only be measured by the ability to play different genres and sub-genres of one, but also by the ability of TECHNIQUES that he can handle with his instrument.

It is vitally important for a musician to have mastery of the groove in different genres, to be able to sustain the band whatever genre they play, pop, rock, jazz, funk, salsa, it is the main job of the bassist without a doubt.

The melodic domain is also important, when recording to improvise or simply to study "solos" it is important to create the ability to be able to play melodies easily, and this takes previous work and that can last years and is auditory training. or melodic dictation.

The bass player must be clear about these two areas, since his instrument can be both melodic and rhythmic and harmonic.

Many bass players are satisfied with only knowing the root notes of each chord and excuse themselves with this phrase "I am a bassist, I don't need to know the chord" and it is sad and I think it is a big mistake because many things depend on the bass, and it is necessary that knows as much or more about harmony as the pianist, indeed, it is necessary for a bassist to play a little piano as a complementary instrument.

And finally, percussive techniques like the Slap.

These techniques are used in different styles, merengue, bachata, funk, jazz fusion and stop counting, and make it clear that if you want to be a recording musician you must have mastery of this technique, because you do not know when you are going to play. some of this in some style that I mentioned.

I want to clarify that it is not about dominating 1000% all genres, for the simple reason that we always have a style that is our strength, and others in which we defend ourselves or we simply know how to play well and with solidity.

I consider that my strong genre is jazz, although I don't show that I play it much, nevertheless I study everything from vallenato to Cuban timba. And this is how you manage to be versatile and that few things take you as a surprise.
