Today we are going to review the Burzum album “Filosofem”. First, a little announcement:
Burzum is a Black Metal project composed of only one member, Varg Vikernes, whose name is infamous for a wide range of reasons: the fact that he is the author of a murder (here we are talking about the case of Euronymous, pseudonym of Øystein Aarseth , who was the guitarist in the Black Metal band Mayhem), which took place in 1993, or simply because of his current online presence, where he expresses his extremist political and social views.
I want to make it clear from the beginning of this review that these issues, especially the part that involves politics, are not being taken into account and I only intend to talk about the music itself, which is what matters here.
Personally, I don't care about issues like an artist's political views and that doesn't stop me from liking the art produced by them, as long as that art isn't dedicated solely to the expression of those values. In my view, Burzum goes much further, that's why I can like his music, even if I disagree with the things that the one behind it thinks. Now let's go to the review:
The Filosofem album was the last album recorded by Burzum before Varg Vikernes was arrested, the recordings were made in 1993. However, the album was only released in 1996.
The album cover is a work of art created by the Norwegian illustrator and painter Theodor Kittelsen. Kittelsen's works are heavily based on Norway, their fairy tales and folklore and are also on the covers of other Burzum albums.

The first song on this album is one of the most famous of all Burzum songs and I decided to talk about it because it means a lot to me personally. This song was very present in my life when I was delving into heavy metal and especially black metal, and it is a song that managed to turn into sound a wide range of things that were confusing and frightening to me: dark feelings, depression, deep internal struggles. This song in particular accompanied me through a very difficult time where I was dealing with all these things, so it's very dear to me. Since I'm talking about Dunkelheit, that first song, it's good to explain about Burzum's instrumentation and what its sound like.
Varg optionally chose to record his album in the worst possible sound conditions, using stereo sound instead of an amplifier and a headset mic instead of a good quality mic. That's what made the sound of this album so dirty, distorted, noisy and almost unintelligible. The vocals sound as distorted as the guitar and you can barely understand the notes played. Varg himself described this idea as a rebellion against the good quality of recording that was always used in music.
If the listener strains his ears to hear the riffs, it can be heard that Varg's guitar playing style has something similar to, for example, the Classical Music pattern where themes are created and then variations of that theme are presented. The drums are entirely electronic, this is something that in itself can make someone not like this album, but I personally don't see any problem with electronic drums, both in Black Metal and in other styles. The vocals are completely unintelligible, not to mention an excerpt from Dunkelheit where Varg uses the Spoken Word style and speaks in his real voice instead of using gutturals. In addition, the penultimate song (Rundgang Um Die Transzendentale Saule Der Singularitat) throws the listener into a new and different vortex, this song is a Dark Ambient that transforms everything that this album had meant until then into something different. Because this track is twenty-five minutes long, the listener has a good amount of time for reflection to finally get to the last track of the album, where the classic distorted guitar is heard again, and then that's it.

For me, this is an extremely interesting album, for several reasons that are among what I said above, especially the moments where the musical style changes and creates new sound layers for the listener to break through. I put it as a 9/10.

Burzum é um projeto de Black Metal composto por apenas um integrante, Varg Vikernes, cujo nome é infame por uma grande gama de razões: pelo fato de que ele é autor de um assassinato(aqui estamos falando do caso de Euronymous, pseudônimo de Øystein Aarseth, que era o guitarrista da banda de Black Metal Mayhem), ocorrido em 1993, ou simplesmente por conta da atual presença dele online, onde expressa suas visões políticas e sociais extremistas.
Quero deixar claro desde o início desse review que essas questões, especialmente a parte que envolve política, não estão sendo levadas em conta e eu pretendo apenas falar sobre a música em si, que é o que importa aqui.
Pessoalmente, eu não me importo com questões como as visões políticas de um artista e isso não me impede de gostar da arte produzida por ele, desde que essa arte não esteja dedicada somente à expressão desses valores. Ao meu ver, Burzum vai muito além, é por isso que eu posso gostar de sua música, mesmo que discorde das coisas que pensa quem está por trás delas. Vamos agora ao review:
O álbum Filosofem foi o último álbum gravado pelo Burzum antes da prisão de Varg Vikernes, as gravações foram feitas em 1993. Entretanto, o álbum foi lançado apenas em 1996.
A capa do álbum é uma obra de arte criada pelo ilustrador e pintor norueguês Theodor Kittelsen. As obras de Kittelsen são fortemente baseadas na Noruega, em seus contos de fada e folclore e estão também nas capas de outros álbuns do projeto de Vikernes.

A primeira música desse álbum é uma das mais famosas entre todas as músicas do Burzum e decidi falar dela porque tem grande importância para mim, pessoalmente. Essa música esteve muito presente em minha vida no momento em que eu estava me aprofundando no metal pesado e, especialmente, no Black Metal, e é uma música que conseguiu tornar em som uma grande gama de coisas que eram confusas e assustadoras para mim: sentimentos obscuros, depressão, lutas internas profundas. Esta música em especial me acompanhou num momento muito difícil onde eu lidava com todas essas coisas, portanto, é muito querida para mim. Já que estou falando de Dunkelheit, essa primeira música, é bom explicar sobre a instrumentação do Burzum e sobre como é seu som.
Varg opcionalmente escolheu gravar seu álbum com as piores condições sonoras possíveis, utilizando um som estéreo no lugar de um amplificador e um microfone de headset no lugar de um microfone de boa qualidade. Isso foi o que fez com que o som desse álbum fosse tão sujo, distorcido, ruidoso e quase ininteligível. Os vocais parecem tão distorcidos quanto a guitarra e mal pode-se entender as notas tocadas. O próprio Varg descreveu essa ideia como uma rebelião contra a boa qualidade.
Se o ouvinte forçar seus ouvidos para conseguir ouvir os riffs, pode-se perceber que o estilo de tocar guitarra de Varg tem algo semelhante com, por exemplo, o padrão de Música Clássica onde criam-se temas e em seguida são apresentadas variações desse tema. A bateria é totalmente eletrônica, isso é algo que por si só pode fazer com que alguém não goste desse álbum, mas eu, pessoalmente, não vejo nenhum problema com baterias eletrônicas, tanto no Black Metal quanto em outros estilos. Os vocais são completamente ininteligíveis, sem contar um trecho de Dunkelheit onde Varg utiliza o estilo Spoken Word e fala com sua verdadeira voz no lugar de usar guturais. Além disso, a penúltima música(Rundgang Um Die Transzendentale Saule Der Singularitat) joga o ouvinte num novo e diferente vórtice, essa música se trata de um Dark Ambient que transforma em algo diferente tudo que esse álbum havia significado até ali. Por essa faixa ter vinte e cinco minutos de duração, o ouvinte tem um bom tempo de reflexão para finalmente chegar até a última faixa do álbum, onde ouve-se novamente a clássica guitarra distorcida e, então, fim.

Para mim, esse é um álbum extremamente interessante, por diversos motivos que estão entre o que eu falei acima, especialmente os momentos onde o estilo musical se modifica e cria novas camadas sonoras para o ouvinte desbravar. Eu o coloco como um 9/10.

Ainda é meu álbum preferido de Black. Lembro da sensação estranha quando eu o descobri, de sentir que aquilo fazia mal, mas que ao mesmo tempo, é o que eu precisava ouvir para exalar pelos poros uma dor obscura que guardava por tempo demais.
