This is a controversial story. One more, as well as the story of the lead singer Dead, from the band Mayhem, that appeared in the movie “Lords Of Chaos”, inspired by the book of the same name. In the post where I told the story of Dead, I said that I would not use either this book or this movie as sources of information and I will continue that way in this post here, where I will tell the story of the murder of the guitarist Øystein Aarseth, known as Euronymous.
Why not trust Lords Of Chaos? Well, I read the book and watched the movie. I think the book, especially, is an attempt that lacks any good literature to tell scary stories about churches being burned and young people joining satanic cults during the second wave of Black Metal in Norway. Honestly, neither this book nor this movie seems to me to address the audience of the Black Metal fans who seek to delve into the stories of the great bands of this style, but rather to people who do not know these stories and will think “Wow, burning churches, these guys are badass!”. To me, both are just weak and poorly done journalism that doesn't seek the facts about everything that happened in that medium. I leave this angry opinion here, now let's get to the story:
Euronymous was the great pioneer of the Norwegian Black Metal scene for the second wave, he was responsible for developing many of the particularities that the style has to this day and no one can deny that he had a lot of skill with the guitar. Damn, the guy was an excellent guitarist! He was the leader of the band that is probably the best known in Black Metal! He was like a leader for a great group of musicians, from many different bands! He even had his own record label!
But…none of that stops the guy from being a dumb asshole, right?
Apparently, Euronymous had no interest in being friendly with anyone. He was pretentious and extremely concerned with the image of Black Metal in the media, not to mention the image of Mayhem, his band. It seems that he would do anything to make both the musical style he helped create and his band seem satanic and frightening to ordinary people who would be watching the news about young people playing music that talked about the Devil, burning churches and committing other crimes, and he did.

As I told you in my other post, Euronymous and Dead didn't get along when the two were part of Mayhem. They fought constantly. Necrobutcher, who was the band's bassist when Dead committed suicide, claims that it was Euronymous who told him about the singer's death, saying:
“Øystein called me the next day... and said, "Dead did something really cool! He killed himself." I thought, "Have you lost your mind? How come you can think this is something cool?". He said, "Relax, I took pictures of everything." I was in shock and grief. He was just thinking about how to exploit it. So I told him, "Okay. Don't ever talk to me again until you destroy these photos."
Also, we know that the drummer Hellhammer claimed that Euronymous encouraged Dead to kill himself directly, telling him so.
And that's what happened.
Necrobutcher stated that Euronymous only thought about how he could exploit Dead's death and so he did, using a photo of the vocalist's corpse on the cover of a bootleg album by the band. In addition, he spread several stories, saying that Dead committed suicide because Black Metal had become too popular and commercial. The band members confirmed that Euronymous made necklaces out of pieces of the vocalist's skull and distributed these necklaces to them and other musicians, those that Euronymous deemed "worthy".
After that, Necrobutcher left the band.

Varg Vikernes' relationship with Euronymous and the murder:
With the death of one member and the departure of another, Mayhem needed to change its lineup to record the famous album “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas”. Among the musicians who would be the new members of the band was Varg Vikernes, Burzum's only member, who would be the bassist.
Rumors have it that Euronymous and Varg began to have a falling out because Varg was going to leave Euronymous's label and create his own label. Varg founded his record label under the name “Burznazg Productions”, which was later changed to “Cymophane Records”.
Varg claims that a friend told him that Euronymous was spreading the word that he was going to kill him and that he said the way he would do that was by finding a way to knock Varg out, carry him into a forest and then torture him to death. Also, he would record everything on video.
One day, they were supposed to meet to resolve something related to the record companies's contracts. Varg says that after hearing what Euronymous was telling his friends, he was extremely apprehensive about meeting the guitarist in person. According to him, even with fear, he went to Euronymous's apartment with the company of his friend Snorre Ruch, known as "Blackthorn". Upon the two's arrival, Varg and Euronymous had an argument, which turned violent, and Varg stabbed Euronymous to death.
Euronymous's body was found on a staircase outside the apartment, with 23 stab wounds in total: 2 to the head, 5 to the neck and 16 to the back. The media blamed the Swedish black metal scene, with which Euronymous had a rift, for the murder.
It was speculated that the murder was the result of a financial dispute over the Burzum recordings. Varg denied all the allegations and claimed that the stabbing took place in self-defense and that Euronymous had attacked him.

Varg was sentenced to 21 years in prison, which is the maximum sentence in Norway. He left prison on parole after serving a 16-year sentence and is currently free.

Por que não confiar nos Lords Of Chaos? Bom, eu li o livro e assisti o filme. Eu penso que o livro, especialmente, é uma tentativa que não demonstra nenhuma boa literatura de contar histórias assustadoras sobre igrejas sendo queimadas e jovens se unindo em cultos satânicos durante a segunda onda do Black Metal na Noruega. Sinceramente, nem esse livro e nem esse filme me parecem se dirigir ao público que é fã do Black Metal e busca se aprofundar nas histórias das grandes bandas desse estilo, mas sim à pessoas que não conhecem essas histórias e vão pensar “Uau, queimar igrejas, esses caras são foda!”. Para mim, ambos são apenas jornalismo fraco e mal feito, que não busca os fatos sobre tudo que aconteceu naquele meio. Deixo aqui essa opinião irritada, agora vamos para a história:

Ele foi como um líder para um grande grupo de músicos, de diversas bandas diferentes! Ele até mesmo teve sua própria gravadora!
Mas…nada disso impede o cara de ser um cuzão idiota, né?
Ao que tudo indica, Euronymous não tinha nenhum interesse em ser uma pessoa amigável com ninguém. Ele era pretensioso e extremamente preocupado com a imagem do Black Metal para a mídia, sem contar a imagem do Mayhem, sua banda. O que parece é que ele faria qualquer coisa para que tanto o estilo musical que ajudou a criar quanto sua banda parecessem coisas satânicas e assustadoras para as pessoas comuns que estariam assistindo ao jornal e vendo notícias sobre jovens tocando música que falava sobre o Diabo, queimando igrejas e cometendo outros crimes, e ele fez.

Como contei em meu outro post, Euronymous e Dead não se davam bem quando os dois faziam parte do Mayhem. Eles brigavam constantemente. Necrobutcher, que era o baixista da banda quando Dead cometeu suicídio, afirma que foi Euronymous que lhe contou sobre a morte do vocalista, dizendo:
“Øystein me chamou no dia seguinte... e disse: "Dead fez algo realmente legal! Ele se matou". Eu pensei, "você perdeu o juízo? Como assim fez algo legal?". Ele disse: "Relaxa, eu tirei fotos de tudo". Eu estava em choque e aflito. Ele estava somente pensando em como explorar isso. Então eu disse a ele: "Ok. Nunca mais fale comigo antes de destruir estas fotos".
Além disso, sabemos que o baterista Hellhammer afirmou que Euronymous encorajava Dead a se matar diretamente, falando isso para ele.
E foi o que aconteceu.
Necrobutcher afirmou que Euronymous pensava apenas em como poderia explorar a morte de Dead e ele realmente a explorou, utilizando uma foto do cadáver do vocalista na capa de um álbum bootleg da banda. Além disso, ele espalhou diversas histórias, falando que Dead cometeu suicídio porque o Black Metal havia se tornado muito popular e comercial. Os membros da banda confirmaram que Euronymous fez colares com pedaços do crânio do vocalista e distribuiu esses colares para eles e outros músicos, aqueles que Euronymous considerava “dignos”.
Depois disso, Necrobutcher saiu da banda.

Com a morte de um membro e a saída de outro, o Mayhem precisava mudar sua formação para gravar o famoso álbum “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas”. Entre os músicos que seriam os novos membros da banda estava Varg Vikernes, membro único do Burzum, que seria o baixista.
Boatos dizem que Euronymous e Varg começaram a se desentender porque Varg iria abandonar o selo da gravadora de Euronymous e criar sua própria gravadora. Varg fundou sua gravadora com o nome “Burznazg Productions”, que foi trocado, depois, para “Cymophane Records”.

De acordo com ele, mesmo com receio, foi até o apartamento de Euronymous com a companhia de seu amigo Snorre Ruch, conhecido como “Blackthorn”. Na chegada dos dois, Varg e Euronymous tiveram uma discussão, que acabou por tornar-se violenta, e Varg esfaqueou Euronymous até a morte.
O corpo de Euronymous foi encontrado numa escada fora do apartamento, com 23 lesões de facadas no total: 2 na cabeça, 5 no pescoço e 16 nas costas. A mídia culpou a cena do Black Metal sueco, com a qual Euronymous tinha uma richa, pelo assassinato.
Foi especulado que o assassinato foi resultado de uma briga financeira por conta das gravações do Burzum. Varg negou todas as acusações e afirmou que o esfaqueamento ocorreu em legítima defesa e que Euronymous o havia atacado.

Varg foi condenado a 21 anos de prisão, essa é a pena máxima na Noruega. Ele deixou a prisão em liberdade condicional após cumprir uma pena de 16 anos e atualmente está livre.

Adorei o quadro das princesas na prisão. E sobre essa questão desse amigo do Varg que você comentou que foi com ele até o apartamento? Eu não sabia que havia um terceiro sujeito na cena.
Lembro que haviam argumentos sobre todas as facadas praticamente serem nas costas do Euronymous, mas nunca averiguei, nem sei se tem foto do corpo dele etc. Se foi defesa ou não, não sei, só sei que era uma gente perturbada de forma geral, e que infelizmente isso é bastante comum no meio, mas perturbações temos em todo lado e todas as vertentes musicais. Pois é, a galera geralmente não lembra muito do Blackthorn nessa cena, mas ele estava lá de fato. Se não me engano ele relatou que ficou do lado de fora do apartamento fumando e não viu o que aconteceu.
