Muchas personas consideran que la música funciona para cantar, bailar o inclusive acompañar algún evento en particular. Otras, ven a la música como un elemento narrativo ideal para contar una historia o inclusive ofrecernos ideas aproximadas de la trama sin decir una palabra. Esto último se puede lograr mediante un elemento musical llamado leitmotiv.
Many people consider that music works for singing, dancing or even accompanying a particular event. Others see music as an ideal narrative element to tell a story or even offer approximate ideas of the plot without saying a word. The latter can be achieved through a musical element called leitmotif.
Para ser más exactos, el leitmotiv es un motivo musical recurrente que consiste en identificar a un personaje, objeto, emoción o alguna otra idea en concreto que se desea resaltar. El Leitmotiv es un término acuñado en la época de 1860 gracias a la explotación de este recurso en las óperas de Wagner. En su música es fácil reconocer los leitmotiv asignados a cada uno de los personajes que se presentan en sus obras. Incluso el compositor refleja algunas emociones, variando la rítmica y la tonalidad de un motivo musical para exponerlos en diversas escenas con el fin de generar un carácter y sensaciones diferente.
Claro que Wagner escribió obras para que fueran cantadas en un escenario con un ambiente más teatral ¿Pero qué tiene que ver el leitmotiv con las películas?
To be more precise, the leitmotif is a recurring musical motif that consists of identifying a character, object, emotion or some other specific idea that one wishes to emphasize. Leitmotiv is a term coined in the 1860s thanks to the exploitation of this resource in Wagner's operas. In his music it is easy to recognize the leitmotifs assigned to each of the characters presented in his works. Even the composer reflects some emotions, varying the rhythmic and tonality of a musical motif to expose them in various scenes in order to generate a different character and sensations.
Of course Wagner wrote works to be sung on a stage with a more theatrical atmosphere, but what does the leitmotif have to do with movies?
Como hemos mencionado antes, el Leitmotiv es un elemento musical de carácter narrativo que es utilizado frecuentemente para crear una atmósfera idónea en una escena, ofrecer personalidad y carácter a un grupo de personajes o resaltar aquél objeto mágico y misterioso que se guarda en la bóveda 713 del banco de Gringotts.

As we have mentioned before, the Leitmotif is a musical element of narrative character that is frequently used to create an ideal atmosphere in a scene, to offer personality and character to a group of characters or to highlight that magical and mysterious object that is kept in the vault 713 of the Gringotts bank.
If you still don't understand how it works, here are three types of leitmotifs that will allow you to recognize the circumstances exposed in a film
- Leitmotiv en relación a los personajes: Es aquél motivo musical que se presenta para identificar a los personajes, sea protagonista, antagonista o personajes secundarios. La función de este motivo melódico es presentar al personaje en la escena, resaltar el carácter psicológico, mostrar emociones o intenciones ocultas. Con respecto a la última función, en ocasiones, la música se encarga de ayudar al filme a mostrar aquellos sentimientos o pensamientos que tiene el personaje en escena. Los motivos reales para este tipo de música es ofrecer un adelanto a lo que se viene en la trama o mostrar el estado emotivo del personaje.
- Leitmotif in relation to the characters: It is that musical motif that is presented to identify the characters, whether protagonist, antagonist or secondary characters. The function of this melodic motif is to introduce the character in the scene, highlight the psychological character, show emotions or hidden intentions. Regarding the last function, sometimes, the music is in charge of helping the film to show those feelings or thoughts that the character has in the scene. The real reasons for this type of music is to offer a preview of what is coming in the plot or to show the emotional state of the character.
- Leitmotiv con relación a la escena: Es el que se encarga de anticipar los significados de una escena. En la mayoría de los casos, el elemento musical es el más idóneo para dar pistas al espectador de todo aquello que está próximo a suceder. Un leitmotiv puede intensificar las emociones que se exponen en la escena. En este caso, la función de la música es resaltar los momentos dramáticos de la historia. Se subraya la acción, logrando diferenciar una escena de la otra.
- Leitmotif in relation to the scene: It is the one that is in charge of anticipating the meanings of a scene. In most cases, the musical element is the most suitable to give clues to the spectator of what is about to happen. A leitmotif can intensify the emotions that are exposed in the scene. In this case, the function of music is to highlight the dramatic moments of the story. It underlines the action, differentiating one scene from the other.
- Leitmotiv en relación con la historia: En este último caso, se establece un estilo en lenguaje musical con el fin de acoplarse con la temática de la historia. Esto proporciona una atmósfera envolvente que ofrece personalidad a la película. Otra función, es acelerar o retardar el ritmo narrativo.
- Leitmotif in relation to the story: In the latter case, a style in musical language is established in order to fit the theme of the story. This provides an enveloping atmosphere that offers personality to the film. Another function is to speed up or slow down the narrative rhythm.

Existen muchas películas en donde se puede evidenciar la explotación de este recurso musical. Sagas como Star Wars, Harry Potter, Los Juegos del Hambre, el señor de los anillos, los increibles, Los Miserables, entre otras, poseen una banda sonora compuesta casi en su totalidad por el uso del leitmotiv.
