Another day in the studio trying out different microphone configurations, signal paths and equipment. Today we are mainly trying to get a good sound out of the new addition to the studio: the Mapex 13 x 6 Maple Black Panther. I had a drummer come in for a session a few weeks ago and absolutely loved how it sounded! He ended up selling it to me. We used a trusty old SM57 going through a UA 610 preamp with light opto compression.
The other thing worth nothing about this session is the overhead configuration. I like to try different configurations to experiment the variations of the recorded sound. Today, I did a wide A B configuration which I find most appealing when the drummer is using a lot of toms and also when you want a very wide stereo image.
The mics I'm using are a pair of Røde NT5's places 46 inches (118 cm) from the center of the snare drum. (yes, we always measure it exactly)
For the kick drum, we are using a 22' Ludwig miced with an Audix D6.
