Hello Three Tune Tuesday lovers on Hive!
Today I've decided to knock on the doors of this wonderful community for the first time, motivated by @ablaze, the creator and main promoter of this initiative, and after discovering some interesting musical offerings shared by many special people here.
For this occasion, I want to offer you an initial look at the Cuban musical groups that have earned a significant place in the world of Rock and Roll in all its generic expressions, according to the spectrum of melodic projection they project.
I know that many people around the world associate Cuba with Salsa, Son, Guaracha, Danzón, Bolero, even Jazz... But little is said about the wealth of talented musicians who champion Rock and Roll, with all the challenges that entails on an island that doesn't exactly favor this cultural expression.
I'll introduce you to three groups that are different in every way, but with something in common: the ability to draw large crowds to each of their performances, achieving significant milestones in their careers. Another thing they have in common is that, unfortunately, none of the three groups are currently active in the country.
First, meet Tendencia, a group formed in Pinar del Río, our westernmost province, in 1994.
Tendencia was not a rock group like most of those that have emerged and continue to emerge in Cuba. They always enjoyed the special support of important figures in the cultural sphere and the country's most influential circles. However, this did not alienate them from the public. Their vision was genuinely a champion of something unique: the fusion of authentic Cuban rhythms with the most powerful chords that rock offers in its diverse range.
The quality of their music was undeniable from the very beginning. This allowed them to conquer major stages around the world, recording with German and international record labels, and winning numerous awards at music festivals in Cuba, the Americas, and Europe. They shared the stage in Caracas, Venezuela, with bands like Arcángel and Paul Gilman. In Spain, they had the opportunity to play alongside iconic groups such as Barón Rojo, Fe de Ratas, Avalanch, Hamlet, The Locos, Reincidentes, the German band COR, Cannibal Corpse, Body Count, Hatebreed, Madball, Soulfly, Judas Priest, Ditte Whal, Parkway Drive, Crowbar, God Dethroned, and Apocalíptica, among others.
With a distinctly Cuban folk metal or hybrid rock style, they are considered by many to be the most important rock band in Cuba over the last three decades. To give you an idea, in Cuba, until the arrival of "Tendencia," it wasn't common for any rock group to be featured on television; they paved the way for other bands to promote the genre through these national mass media outlets. Thanks to them, an important international rock festival, Patria Grande, was also established in Pinar del Río, a festival that has lost momentum since the group emigrated to the US a few years ago. I encourage you to find their albums and give them a listen. If you like rock and roll, you won't regret it.
In 1994, but in central Cuba, in my city of Santa Clara, other musical groups championing rock and roll also emerged. It was a year of great challenges for the average Cuban, who went from believing they had no economic needs to having nothing but dreams...
Thus, artistic expressions began to arise, embracing those who needed to project their concerns, their yearning to be heard, seen, or read. Eskoria was one of those artistic projects that broke molds and challenged pre-established norms to open a new range of possibilities for the Cuban rock scene.
Eskoria, the pioneering punk rock band on the island, began as Eskoria del Odio (Scum of Hate), a group primarily influenced by Spanish and Argentinian punk. Its members changed over time, but two stand out as icons: frontman William Fabián, murdered in 2010 while peacefully enjoying a rock concert in our city, and Ernesto Rodríguez, from Cienfuegos, who also passed away a few years ago. Most of the other members who have been in the band are now living outside of Cuba.
Besides being the pioneer of punk in Cuba, Eskoria made another contribution to the national rock scene by featuring the first woman to play in a Cuban punk band. At one point, the group even included two women musicians.
While they initially drew influence from Spanish rock, they gradually imbued their music with a distinctly Cuban national identity through the appropriation of Cuban symbols, which they projected in their powerful and profound lyrics.
As the 1990s came to an end and the new century began, in 2000, also in Santa Clara, Eskarcha was born, a rock group with influences from Punk, Thrash Metal, and Alternative, which in 2004 became Cry Our For, a much more mature group in its conception that incorporates other expressions such as Black Metal, Gothic, Heavy, Swedish Metal, and Death Metal, but with a particular stridency that defines them within Melodic Metal.
Due to the quality of their sound, they quickly earned important awards at national festivals, garnering valuable international reviews. They were the first rock band from Villa Clara to win an award on a television program featuring various musical genres.
Humberto Martínez, its director and lead singer, has given the band a distinctive vocal timbre. To give you an idea, there are songs in which he has managed to project up to seven different tonal melodies live—I'm not talking about a studio recording.
They were the rock group with the greatest potential to become the best band of recent times on the island, but this group is now outside of Cuba. Only their drummer, who played with them for many years, remains. Fortunately, the band hasn't completely disbanded; some of its members are reunited in the US and these days play the occasional small venue in Florida.
So far, I hope I've inspired you to explore the discographies of these three distinctive Cuban rock bands. Let us know what you think!

Hoy me decido a tocar las puertas de esta hermosa comunidad, por primera vez, motivado por @ablaze como creador y principal promotor de la iniciativa y luego de descubrir a interesantes propuestas musicales que han compartido muchas personas especiales por acá.
Para esta ocasión, quiero traerles una inicial aproximación al escenario de los grupos musicales cubanos que han ganado un puesto significativo en el universo que ofrece el Rock and Roll en todas sus expresiones genéricas según el expectro de proyección melódica que proyectan.
Sé que muchas personas en el mundo asocian a Cuba con la Salsa, el Son, la Guaracha, el Danzón, el Bolero, el Jazz incluso... Pero poco se divulga sobre el caudal de buenos músicos que defienden al Rock and Roll con todo el desafío que ello implica llevarlo a cabo dentro de una isla que para nada privilegia a esta expresión de la cultura.
Les mostraré a tres agrupaciones diferentes en todos sus aspectos, pero con algo en común: capacidad de aglutinar grandes concentraciones de público en cada una de sus presentaciones, llegando a marcar pautas históricas significativas dentro de sus trayectorias. Otro elemento en común que tienen, es que, lamentablemente ninguna de las tres agrupaciones se encuentran ya activas dentro del país.
En primer lugar, conozcan a Tendencia, grupo que se creó en la más occidental de nuestras provincias, Pinar del Río, en el año 1994.
Tendencia, no fue un grupo de rock como la mayoría de los que han surgido y surgen en Cuba. Ellos siempre contaron con el apoyo particular de personalidades importantes de la cultura y las altas esferas decisivas del país. Sin embargo, ello no le propició un alejamiento del público. Su proyección era auténticamente defensora de algo singular, la unión de los ritmos criollos genuinos con los acordes más fuertes que brinda el rock en su abanico de proyección.
La calidad de su música era incuestionable desde que surgió. Esto, permitió que conquistara grandes escenarios del mundo, llegando a grabar con productoras alemanas y de otras nacionalidades, y alcanzando premios disímiles en festivales de música en Cuba, en América y Europa. Compartió escenario en Caracas, Venezuela, con bandas como "Arcángel" y "Paul Gilman". En España, contaron con la posibilidad de tocar junto a grupos tan icónicos como "Barón Rojo", "Fe de Ratas", "Avalanch", "Hamlet", "The Locos", "Reincidentes", la banda alemana "COR", "Cannibal Corpse", "Body Count", "Hatebreed", "Madball", "Soulfly", "Judas Priest", "Ditte Whal", "Parkway Drive", "Crowbar", "God Dethroned", y "Apocalíptica", entre otros.
Con un estilo folk metal o rock metal mestizo puramente cubano, es considerada por muchos como la banda de rock más importante en Cuba en las últimas tres décadas. Para que tengan una idea, en Cuba, hasta la llegada de "Tendencia", no era común que se divulgara por la televisión a ninguna agrupación de rock; ellos, abrieron el camino a que otras bandas lograsen divulgar el género por estos medios de difusión masiva nacional. También gracias a ellos, en Pinar del Río, se llegó a establecer un importante festival internacional de rock, el Patria Grande, festival que ha perdido fuerza luego que el grupo emigró hacia EEUU hace unos años. Les invito a que busquen sus discos y les escuchen. Si a ustedes les gusta el rock and roll, no se van a arrepentir de escucharles.
En 1994, pero en el centro de Cuba, en mi ciudad Santa Clara, también surgen otros grupos musicales defensores del rock and roll. Era un año de grandes desafíos para el cubano común que pasó de creer que no tenía necesidades económicas, a no tener nada, solo sueños...
Así, comenzaron a surgir expresiones artísticas que abrazaron a quienes necesitaban proyectar sus inquietudes, sus ansias de ser escuchado, visto o leído. Eskoria, fue uno de esos proyectos artísticos que rompieron moldes y enfrentaron cánones preestablecidos para abrir un diapasón nuevo a la escena del rock en Cuba.
Eskoria, quien llega a ser la agrupación pionera del Punk Rock de la Isla, nace llamándose Eskoria del Odio, un grupo influenciado por el punk español y argentino principalmente. Sus miembros fueron cambiando al paso del tiempo, pero hay dos que resultan los íconos del grupo cuando se les menciona: el líder William Fabián, asesinado en 2010 mientras disfrutaba tranquilamente como público en un concierto de rock de nuestra ciudad, y Ernesto Rodríguez, de Cienfuegos, quien falleció también hace hace pocos años. La mayoría del resto de los que han estado en el grupo, se encuentran fuera de Cuba.
Además de ser la pionera del Punk en Cuba, Eskoria tuvo otro aporte a la escena del rock nacional al tener a la primera mujer que tocó en un grupo de punk cubano. Llegó a tener a dos mujeres como músicos parte del grupo.
Si bien nacieron con influencia del rock español, poco a poco fueron dotando a su música de una identidad nacional cubana a través de la apropiación de símbolos nuestros proyectados en sus letras de gran impacto y profundidad.
Ya finalizada la década de 1990 y comenzando el nuevo siglo, en el año 2000, también en Santa Clara, nace Eskarcha, grupo de rock con influencia del Punk, Trash Metal, y lo Alternativo, que se transformó en 2004 en Cry Our For, un grupo mucho más maduro en la concepción que incorpora otras expresiones como el Black Metal, Gótico, Heavy, Metal Sueco, y el Death Metal, pero con una estridencia particular que les define dentro del Metal Melódico.
Por la calidad del sonido que ofrecían, enseguida fueron merecedores de importantes premios en festivales a nivel nacional, llegando a obtener críticas internacionales muy valiosas. Fue la primera banda de rock de Villa Clara en alcanzar un premio en un programa televisivo de diferentes géneros musicales.
Humberto Martínez, su director y cantante principal, le ha conferido un timbre vocal distintivo. Para que tengan una idea, hay canciones en las que ha logrado proyectar hasta siete melodías tonales diferentes en vivo, no les hablo de una grabación de estudio.
Eran el grupo de rock que más proyección tenían para convertirse en la mejor banda de los últimos tiempos en la Isla, pero ya este grupo se encuentra fuera de Cuba. Acá solo queda quien fuera su baterista durante bastantes años. Por fortuna, la banda no se ha desintegrado del todo, algunos de sus miembros están reunidos en EEUU y hoy día tocan en algún que otro pequeño escenario de la Florida.
