Hello friends of Hive, I hope you have a great weekend. Today I want to tell you about the most chilling experience I've had in my years as a chorister.
This happened in 2005, when I joined the choral group Nuestra Señora de La Asunción. At that time, I was in the process of learning the entire repertoire that director Luigi Bellomo had prepared for an international competition that we had a few months after I joined the group.
Hola amigos de Hive, espero tengan un excelente fin de semana. El día de hoy quiero contarles la experiencia más escalofriante que he tenido en mis años de coralista.
Esto sucedió en el año 2005, cuando ingresé al grupo coral Nuestra Señora de La Asunción. Para ese momento, estaba en el proceso de aprender todo el repertorio que tenía preparado el director Luigi Bellomo, para una competencia internacional que teníamos unos meses después de mi ingreso a la agrupación.
The repertoire was quite varied, there were songs sung in Latin, French, Japanese, etc. Works of Venezuelan folklore, habaneras, tangos, among others, were sung. And one of those works was Aglepta, composed by the Swedish musician Arne Mellnäs.
Here I want to clarify that it was the first time I was listening to this work, at that time my location in the choir formation was right in the middle and I could hear the different sounds on each side. Also at that time we were in a place with a lot of reverberation so it made the experience even more impressive.
El repertorio era bastante variado, había temas cantados en latín, francés, japonés, etc. Se cantaban obras de folklore venezolano, habaneras, tangos, entre otros. Y una de esas obras era Aglepta, compuesta por el músico sueco Arne Mellnäs.
Acá quiero aclarar que era primera vez que escuchaba esta obra, en ese momento mi ubicación en la formación coral era justo en el medio y podía oír los diferentes sonidos a cada lado. También en ese momento estábamos en un sitio con mucha reverberación por lo que hizo que la experiencia fuese aún más impactante.
It is a work where there are no classical harmonic or melodic elements, but rather it is based on the experimentation of sounds that voices can produce in order to achieve that uncomfortable effect. There are moments where there are shouts, whispers, crescendos, exhalations and very abrupt decrescendo, which perfectly manage to hold the listener's attention and impression. In my case, being in the middle of the choir and not knowing what was happening and what was coming, I remember that while listening to them, I got goosebumps and was really impressed and didn't know what facial expression to have haha.
Es una obra donde no hay elementos armónicos ni melódicos clásicos, sino que se basa en la experimentación de sonidos que pueden producir las voces con el fin de lograr ese efecto incómodo. Hay momentos donde hay gritos, susurros, crescendos, exhalaciones y decrescendo muy abruptos, que logran a la perfección mantener la atención e impresión del oyente. En mi caso, al estar en el medio del coro y no saber qué era lo que estaba pasando y lo que venía, recuerdo que mientras los oía, me erizaba la piel y estaba realmente impresionada y no sabía que expresión facial tener jaja.
After learning this piece, the sensation was different, rather I really enjoyed singing it since I could see the different expressions of the public. Ya luego al aprender esta obra, la sensación era otra, más bien disfrutaba muchísimo cantarla ya que podía ver las diferentes expresiones del público.
